Antibiotics

Just curious on everyone's opinion on these and their overuse.

Would anyone go out of their way to get a prescription for them when showing weak cold symptoms?

I believe they are used to combat bacteria infections and not viruses. I believe colds are due to a virus.

MM, you are exactly right. Antibiotics will do nothing for a cold.

Yeah, I know what they are for. What I am saying is you can go in and get a prescription with no real diagnosis of any bacterial infection. Heck, you can call in over the phone and get one.

Example. I have been having a runny nose and sneezing a little over the past few days. My parents called in and got a prescription for an antibiotic without any proof that I had any need of it.

I wouldnt bother. You know that antibiotics could be useless in as little as ten years!

Good example of why so many bugs are becoming resistant to them. Another reason is because people just take them until they feel better and quit, instead of finishing the whole 10 days.

You are right though, some docs are still giving them out like they are aspirin. Mine is a little stingy with antibiotics - she has to be sure it is bacterial before she'll give antibiotics. I'd have an easier time getting 'roids from her than antibiotics (if interested).

I took antibiotics to treat my acne for close to a year, sure helped there.

Apart from that i need to be passed out on the floor before il take anything, i refuse to take panadol/asprin/sudafed etc. The body is an incredible machine, it knows what its doing 99% of the time.

Gotta agree with you there. These days throwing drugs at problems seems to be the answer from doctors 99% of the time.

I wasn't that sick to begin with, but my family was afraid of me "giving it back to them" after I got what they had.

I just usually try to avoid taking anything unless I feel like I'm too sick to get out of bed.

I don't take anything that I don't have to, and I don't go to the doctor unless I have no choice. The last prescription I took wasn't even mine it was Don's - percocet for getting 5 teeth taken out, the dentist only gave my Tylenol 3 and they didn't do anything! I even hated taking birth control but it was a neccessary evil.

An antibiotic should only ever be given to someone with a cold who is vulnerable enough that in this weakened state will be prone to opportunistic infection which can be very serious.
Unfortunatly doctors give into patients a lot of the time and prescribe anti biotics in too many cases. It is a follish and irresponsible practice.
