Average calories are burn during work out...

Average calories are burn depend upon on many factors like weight goal, time for work out, gender, environment, work out techniques. If some one want to burn more calories then he must to do more work out with more hard. Some heart rate monitors will give you an estimate on calories burned.

Personally, I think people need to stop thinking about workouts in terms of "calories burned".

Agree. Workouts are for making you stronger and better, not just for burning cals.

Totally, working out should be more like paying off a loan, now it only gets awesome when you start getting money back!

I agree with Klide ... just workout effectively. Forget about calories burned (it's only an estimate, anyway). Caloric intake, on the other hand, can be measured.

This applies to losing weight as well? If you're on a deficit and trying to lose weight shouldn't you focus on how much calories you burn per day to make sure its more than you eat, taking into consideration calories burned throughout the day

What should one focus on in a workout then? Length? Reps? How can you judge if you don't have an idea how much calories burned or how much is needed to build muscle?

Me I just do anything I want at any time, lol

You should NOT focus on how many calories you theoretically "burn". You SHOULD focus on how many calories you consume... and the quality of those calories.

Quality, predictable fitness results are most effectively realized by having a plan — both for nutrition, and for smart & progressive workouts.

What kind of result do you really want, Jomo?

It is very important to separate the notion of working out for the purpose of burning calories. Not to say that working out does not burn calories, clearly it does. That said, any calories you "burn" are quickly replaced, and then some, by your meals. There is a reason the quote, "you can not out train a bad diet" exists.

You exercise to gain strength, flexibility, mobility, body awareness, coordination, conditioning etc...

You eat whole real quality food, and a little less then your body needs (deficit), to lose fat and get lean.

If your not eating correctly, your borderline wasting your time going. At least not making the most of it, no question. I personally would not cut my calories to get lean but add more work.

There is a reason why michael phelps eats 10,000 calories a day.

On the other hand judge by how you look like...I stuff my face all day and i am not fat. The only thing i really do not eat is trans fats, and i try to watch the saturated fat consumption.

Great point DBZ. To eat like Michael Phelps, you'll need to exercise like him. He swims about 50 miles a week, and does plenty of other exercise in alternative forms.

Also important to identify your goals... diet and exercise for fat loss is different then diet and exercise for performance.

i would argue the better your performance...the more calories you burn....my performance is directly linked to my calorie consumption...

Michael phelps eats that much because if he does not...his performance goes down... i am the same way. I am in need of about 5000 a day...not even half

5600 is = to a 250 lb person though. Phelps is eating roughly what a 500lb + person consumes to maintain weight.

did you ever hear about the guy that put on 17lbs of fat to swim the english channel? came out ripped

The more fat you have surrounding your body, the more likely you are to be able to survive in water that is 40 degrees colder than your body temperature. Most people should plan on gaining at least 25 pounds, likely more if you are not "stout" to begin with. Many people who only gained 25 pounds have failed because of hypothermia.
