Certifications

Recently I was told about a position that was open at the gym I attend. I took a stab in the dark, talked to the lady, gave her my resume and handed in an application. Only problem is, they just changed theur requirements and you have to be certified.

Fitness has become a huge are of interest to me and I want to try and do something with either nutrion or trianing but I don't have any background. I played volleyball for 4 years and I go to the gym almost everyday.

What kinds of certification does anyone suggest? I have seen someonline classes, but really don't appeal to me because they are no so much hands on.

You could always look around at technical schools in your area. We have a few here in the PNW one in particular Ashmead College http://www.ashmead.edu/ that offers a personal training degree/classes.

If you don't mind doing the study at home/at your own pace you can always pick a cert and study on your own. Do you know what your focus will be?

I got certified through NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) and they are pretty big on corrective exercise.

ASCM is also very well known and I hear it is pretty clinical. Also, there is NSCA which is pretty well respected but is more strength and conditioning focused. Did your gym tell you which certs they except? Some gyms are very particular, others don't care what you have as long as you are certified so they can insure you. good luck!
