conflicting info

Hello everyone, First let me apologize If I offend anyone here, I know the majority here are body builders and I respect and admire your dedication.

I Consulted a trainer yesterday, and we talked for a while. I want to lose 5 pounds and he basically told me I need to do cardio 3 times a week, do a circuit training of 5 sets of 10-12 reps and no carbs at night, but during the day.

Here is my problem... I like rice and I normally don't eat carbs for breakfast or lunch, but do eat about a cup of brown or basmati rice. He told me I need to give it up in order to lose weight... So does that mean I can never eat it again?

Also, is he speaking to me from his prespective, because he is in great shape, and I am not looking to be a body builder, but would like to have some muscle....... please help, I have a hard time letting go of my carbs at night - is there any other way?

There are many ways and some are more sucessful than others. I would eat my cup of rice for breakfast and not dinner. If that doesn't seem to work after a month or so then yes - you will have to give up the rice at night. It depends on which one you want the most. And be happy with your decision.

Loss of comfort

What do want more?

Is rice really that important?
Can you cut it out of your daily consumption, for your health?

The hardest part of changing our diet is the perceived loss of the familiar and comforting. Taking something you love and replacing it with something you don't know and don't love yet. Yet.

It's tough. But worth it.

Be bold, dare to change your life for the better!

Here's my two cents.

First, you should be eating carbs during the day, especially breakfast. I can agree with the no carbs at night.

However, I'm reading your post and you say "about a cup" of rice at night. Depending on your activity level during the day, a cup of rice, in my opinion, will not hinder your ability to lose five pounds.

Losing five pounds will have more to do with cardio and lifting. Of course, you need to eat healthy, but the bottom line is, the more you work out to lose the weight, the greater the chance of your losing it.

If you can, eat a little less and exercise more.

I saw you asked a question "does that mean I can never eat it again?" I'd like to say to everyone out there, there is no such thing!! You can eat anything you want to and still lose weight. How much you lose will depend on your diet and exercise program.

My suggestion would be have the rice for lunch if you can. But if you'd rather have it for dinner, go ahead. I would just increase my activity (exercise) level to compensate for it.

If you must have your rice for dinner, then why not do your workout before dinner? That way your rice is part of your post workout recovery meal. Not always what you eat... sometimes when you eat it is just as important.
