Different Cardio other than treadmill

Hello,

I am looking for another way to do cardio. Looking for something more gradual to get going. The treadmill is very hard for me to run. I get very winded fast. Fast walking doesn't get my heart rate up.

I work out at home. Will consider another piece of equipment.

Any ideas?

I use and like a Stationary Bike. Has worked well for me. But if your getting too winded, maybe you should just tone down the intensity. You say the fast walking doesn't get your heart rate up, but how long did you do it? Did you use an incline? How about a slow jog? Did you try a interval workout? Give it some time and build your endurance.:

If you just don't like running, then I suggest b4 you spend any money, you visit a gym (guest pass or something free) and try out the different machines. Bike, Elliptical, rowing, etc. If you find one you think you'll enjoy doing regularly then you can invest in one for the home.

MrRob,
In your other post I thought you were walking. Running is not for you at this time. You are carrying too much weight to run and you will have some problems later on. Trust me. Walking at intervals of intensity will work for you now. Use the ramp with walking. WALK FAST. It will get your heart rate up.

Fast walking WILL get your heart rate up into the fat-burning zone. You want to experiment with the speed to find the right pace. Keep increasing it until you feel like you are 1/10th of a mile away from having to break into a jog, then notch it back.

For example, for me, 4.5 mph is a fast walk, but 4.6 forces me into the lightest of jogs in order to keep up with the belt. So I set 4.5 mph as my walking threshhold.

Clear?

My treadmill doesn't have speedometer. It is a guessing game to figure out the speed. Ive tried going slow then fast then slow butafter about 5-6 minutes I do not feel weel at all. I stop and feel very nauscious plus the pains.

It is because you are out of shape.
Go to your doctor and have him do a stress test to make sure you are not having some underlying issues.

Get a pedometer that'll show your speed...it's not as accurate but it'll give you a ballpark. If you're having probs work your way up slowly...how do you know walking fast isn't getting your heart rate up?? Check your pulse or get a heart rate monitor to be sure. As Klinger said fast walking should get you into the fat burning zone...that's not high enough to be causing you to burn out so maybe you are perceiving your heart rate to be lower than it actually is?

I have a heart rate monitor. When I walk fast my heart rate does not go over 110-115. When I try to jog the heart rate goes to 143 in a matter of seconds and then the pains start. Trying to go betwwen the fast walk and a slow jog is a huge difference in my heart rate.

I went to a heart doctor about 2-3 years ago and everything was ok there. I could be totally out of shape. I cant walk up a fligh of stairs without being out of breath.

That should tell you right there. The pains and being out of breath is a part of it. Have fun =) We have all been there.

You have to recognize and work within your fitness level. If that means walking fast for 15 or 20 minutes, then do that. When that's comfortable, then increase the time (half hour, then 40 minutes) or increase the intensity. Adjust it regularly to keep yourself challenged -- but maintain control. If your gasping for air or in pain -- you exceeded your level and you need to re-adjust.

Don't dwell on cardio at this time, just do what you can. Keep doing your weight training. Concentrate on you diet. BE CONSISTENT and give your yourself time. The results will come.

Jog makes me breathless and in pain.
Fast walk doesn't feel like I did anything. I can walk and walk and walk..

Maybe I should try a different piece of equipment besides the treadmill.

Isn't it the cardio that will help the fat loss. I can see that lifting weights will eventually create/maintain muscle mass but I would need to gain ALLOT of muscle mass to benefit the fat loss from muscle gain.

My main goal is to loose weight.

I see posts that people have lost 30-40 lbs in 6 months. That might be a little aggerssive but I dont understand.

MR - building up cardio endurance can take time. Especially for running/jogging type activites. Since you are stuck between walk and run mode then why not try interval training. That is what I am doing.

I started with a 30/30 plan last winter where you run for 30 seconds and then walk for 30 seconds to recover. Here is the link to the plan outline. http://www.halhigdon.com/beginrunner/plan.htm . I didn't buy anything, just checked with my doctor and followed this Internet plan.

I had tried other run/walk training but they jumped in intensity to quickly for me. Since I was also weight training as my priority I did not do this everyday, just 2-3 x per week. My progress was slower but I still am moving ahead and my upper heart rate is higher than when I started. I would walk until I felt OK to run again at the beginning. It was longer than 30 seconds.

Now I am doing 90 second runs and 30 second walks.

I don't have a weight loss goal but I do have to be careful to eat enough so that I don't end up losing weight. On days I feel too tuckered out to run I go for a long walk instead and I don't lose any ground.

I have an elliptical machine and I love it. Very easy on the joints and you have many options for programming intensity levels and configurations. Highly reccommended. Get a good one though, you want one with a 'club feel' to it. If you get a cheap one you'll tire of the motion. I've been using mine for about 4 years now.
