fitness america: wtf!?
from todd's "220" journal:

Secondly, the WNSO leans too heavily torwards judging you on your posing routine...and not just that, how good your dance moves are, and whether or not you use props.
|
i was watching some "fitness" america show on TV and i was reminded of todd's comment when i heard the commentators say something like "she's a veteran of the fitness circuit and should do very well in spite of her age" - what, age is a deciding factor on which one is judged now?

Yes for the average person age is very much a factor in determining fitness and relating health. All top athletes no matter how hard they train will not be able to match heir youth performances as long as they had it right at youth level

if she was good enough to make it to the top competition, then her age shouldn't be a factor on which she should be judged.
do they dock points for being too old or do you get bonus points for being young?
the woman in question was only in her early 30s.

"in spite of her age"...... and she's only in her early thirties?
That's just downright annoying. IMO, the older we get, the better we get.
Right?..... :

i look at it this way: as women get older, their estrogen levels decrease (hence the perceived need for horse pee pills). i haven't studied it, but i'm assuming testosterone levels don't decrease and the estrogen:testosterone ratio tilts toward higher test levels in proportion to est. that would explain why women start to grow facial hair and their voices drop as they age.
ergo, it would stand to reason that older women should actually be able to perform better in strength-related activities, even if they lose flexibility and endurance because of their age.

It seems like they were commenting that she was doing well for someone of her age, not making their judgements of her abilities based on it.

That's definitely true in my case.
Of course, that's only because I was such a useless slob to begin with

3N, Yes they do tilt somewhat as the estrogen levels drop. But women's testosterone levels go down with age too. They just have such a small amount to start with that most docs don't feel it's important to replace it when they replace estrogen.
My wife uses estratest since the complete hysterectomy - it works really well. Sometimes with the extra testosterone, it works too well for some women. I have one friend that had to go off of it and switch to a lower dose of testosterone because she was wearing her husband completely out.

No the pint is it harder to reach such a level at an older age and thus she deserves more credit for making this. Now that she is at this level it is not a hinderace biut to actually achieve such a state increasing age can be an obstacle.
Also test levels will decrease with age.

yes, test LEVELS decrease, but there's less estrogen countering it - otherwise, why do older women start getting masculinizing features such as dropped voice and facial hair?
