Fitness & Strengthening Question

Not sure if this is the correct section, but, it seems to be the closest.

I'm 26 years old, and after abusing my body for the last 14 years, i've decided to smarten up a bit.

I'm 6ft 3 inches tall, and weight 11 stone. I'm slim, and have very little muscle mass. I'm seriously unfit, and i have a high metabolism.

I'm trying to get a regime in place for generally getting myself in shape. I'm not interested in having large muscles or such, (i got mugged a month ago, and realised just how weak i am) but i would like to strengthen my body a fair bit. With my body, i figure i'll always be more lean than anything else.

I'm currently doing a 2 mile run every second day, and 10-20 press-ups a day. No other exercise currently being used. Once i gain a fair bit of strength (overall), i'll join a marital arts club, but i don't want to do it when i'm so weak.

Can anyone suggest a few ideas of where i should start?

Well I can suggest only do the cardio once a week and if you join martial arts....dont do it at all, it's not like you need to lose weight, right ? What you need is a good full body workout to follow for a couple of months with a good diet....in the main, although it can be done without adding muscle...strength mostly comes with adding muscle mass, and hell who is going to mug a 200 lb ripped to shreds powerlifter or bodybuilder ? No one I know A full body workout for a couple of months will get you where you need to go, by the way mate when I joined my karate club I was nothing....everyone has to start somewhere. I say go and join up right now, they will teach you where strength comes from and how to use it effectively, not matter if your strong or weak...when you walk into the club door for the first time you will soon see that compared to most of the members, every new comer looks weak. So dont be afriad bro, you will suprise yourself I can tell you, go for it....

At first I would start doing push-ups, sit-ups and squats just to start off. Once you get your upper, middle, and lower body a little stronger then start maybe weight lifting and stuff like that. Keep running too and if you do sit ups and push ups your running will become much easier. Hopes this Helps! Best of Luck to ya!

So is the style prefered on these forums martial arts? I have done martial arts for a good 4 years almost but never thought it was as effective as learning submissive grapling and kickboxing. (the grapling basically teaches you how to choke someone put them on the floor, fight on the floor, break arms, legs, knees, basically stuff for a no holds bar kind of thing, if any of you have ever watched UFC usually the guys that know this are the best;however, as for martial arts people in judo and jujitsu(i think tahts how to spell it) do really well, but a boxer that knows how to graple or do one of these things is pretty badass.
