going camping....

My best friend and I are going on a camping trip from July 16-23. Now, when I say camping, I am talking like no cabin, no toilet, no electricity, literally camping, in the woods, with no gym around . The only exercise we will be getting is walking to and from places which is about a mile from the camp site, so this will be effecient I think for being active.

Also, it's sort of like a music festival so we will be dancing and such. What I need some advice on is this...I already texted her this morning and said "you are going to kill me but I'm bringing dumb bells on our trip" She wasn't too thrilled at first, but I told her I would just get up early and do it and she even wants me to bring an extra set, wahoo. Anyways.... how many pounds should I use? I mean I have been doing 20-30 pounds with barbells, so how should I determine what kind of weights to bring?
Should I just use a 10? 15? 20?

Thanks for some anticipated advice!!!

Honestly, I think youre nuts to consider bringing them along - first of all, if you're walking to your campsite, youre going to have to carry them quite a distance - thats an interesting physical challenge in itself (and indeed many will load a rucksack up with dead weight just to increase the load), but I don't think its that appropriate here. Also, 1 week without resistance training your upper body will not be the end of you (I'm assuming here you will be doing plenty of walking up and down hills with a loaded pack on your back) - and you can always find a tree branch appropriate to pull ups.

I say leave the dumbells at home and spend a week doing high volume bodyweight workouts. Girlie pushups and bodyweight squats over and over for high volume. Walking lunges and burpees over and over for high volume. Jumping jacks and knee lifts over and over for high volume.

Walk, run, climb, walk, run and climb over and over all day long.

not sure how hilly it is and we aren't really going back packing...it's not necessarily a hike, well actually it's not at all, it's more leisure than anything, still don't bring them? also, I was thinking, if I was going to bring them I was going to do them at the tent, not walking anywhere with them, just right as I get up before the day begins....still don't bring them? lol i think I am obssesed!

Ditto to what pierini said. do high volume bodyweight workouts, and you should be good to go!

It's a camping trip. Take a break and enjoy it. And don't forget the toilet paper and a shovel to dig a hole with.

bodyweight workouts will get you through.

I agree with the others, forget the dumbells for a week and enjoy yourself. Take it all in, and when you get back you'll be ready for the weights again. Typically the body doesnt lose muscle strength and size until about 2 weeks of inactivity so you'll be fine.

yup i agree with the others : pushups, jumping pullups to a tree branch, squats, walking, running... you can get plenty of exercise without dumbells!!

what about burpees? do a set of burpees and you won't feel the need to do anymore exercise!

Don't forget to have fun!

I wouldn't take dumbells and I would not be overly concerned about formal exercise either. Recreation is just that. Go for hikes, chop and gather firewood, swim and canoe.

Have fun so that you will be re-energized for when you are back to the real world!

If you really want something else besides bodyweight training, resistance bands would be a lot easier to pack than dumbbells.

You're not obsessed, you just like the way exercise makes you feel, and there's nothing wrong with that.

: so true!! Also, because I would only be thinking about working out, which is what I do all the time especially if I didn't work out that specific day, like I didn't work out, I should have worked out, when will I be able to work out again!

My friend is totally okay with me not bringing them! LOL! we decided to do a 25 minute routine to include lunges, squats, jumping jacks, pushups, crunches ect. Go through once and then do it again like4 or 5 times, then go shower and enjoy the day

Bodybuilding.com - Ross Enamait - Burpee Conditioning - No More Nonsense!

You really don't want to start these on a camping trip. Probably one of the most butt kicking bodyweight exercises there is. No matter how conditioned you are, if you haven't done them, they are going to hurt.

Since adding a couple of bodyweight conditioning workouts a week to my training recently, gaining has became damn near impossible but I'm the leanest and hardest I've been to date. Burpees are the central part of this torture.
