Heart rate monitor
I read the thread about HRM already, I know it's really useful, but...I can't stand the transmitter belt ! So can I do without ? I approx. know how my heart beats, I've got a slow heart rate (65 at rest), and I do quite a lot of cardio (5 times a week 20 minutes, plus I walk all the time cos I don't drive left and hate buses...walk to my gym in 10 minutes (x2), walk to the mall in 20 mn (x2), walk to school in 10 minutes (x2)....My instructor at the gym says I push myself hard enough and am in much better condition than average 40 year old lady... do I have to get a HRM ?

I'm going to go with no. Can't you use the old fashioned watch the clock for 10 seconds method? I agree they are useful, but I don't think they are "essential" to acheiving your goals.

Yes I can do that with my watch. I read that it modifies your heart rate a little bit doing so, because you change the pace of your training but it mustn't be drastic difference !

Oh yeah!! J Lo's body... now do you have her voice? I don't think HR monitors are important at all. You can tell when you reach, and go over, the anaerobic threshold by using Jaster's trick. Pretty soon you'll know what it feels like and you won't have to sing to know if you're going hard enough or not.

Unfortunately no, I don't have Jlo's voice I would be expelled from the gym instantly if ever I started singing !)
Thanks to your advices, I will save at least £50/65$ ! and won't have to bare the transmiter : good news !

I've got a heart rate monitor, but I don't use it very often as I've got a 'feel' for it now and roughly know what my heart is doing.
BTW my Dr measured my heart rate again today and it was 34 at rest!!

Clear!!????
I never tried measuring it, but when I was a kid (and meant to be asleep) I remember seeing how slow I could get my heart to beat.
Might be fun to have another go and see how slow I can get it.

You could do a lactic acid threshold test, (I usually use the eliptical, maintain RPM's and re-measure in 60-second intervals, using HR and RPE).
Once you see the spike, you'll know where your range is technically (the exact BPM) and you'll have an RPE so you'll know what it feels like, and personally I think that whole kinesthetic thing and whole body awareness is going to be a lot more effective (not to mention compliancy is usually better, I hate those bloody ol' belts too!ugh!) ... so you'll learn to associate what feeling to experience, and what level you're at.
I never quite fell into the HR monitors much, except for people I think don't push themselves nearly enough -- then it makes a good reality check, or people just starting off.
But just learn your body, do the talk test,... or if you're holding auditions, let me know where your gym is and I'll join the gang and we can have a listen-to the singing?
