Heavy weights?
hey guys,
I'm 18 years old...and yeah i wanna start gaining some muscle mass...but do u think it's advisable to carry heavy weights at such an age? Some say that at my age...the muscles in my body are not fully develop..so they dont advise me to carry heavy weights...so should i or should i not? :confused:

Carry heavy weights...? I do hope that isn't what it sounds like... Steve's right, you're probably all grown and can lift without a problem. (And about heavy weight, think about how long each day you lift weights and then consider how long you support your own weight each day.) Keep focus on your form and don't try to increase your weights too much too soon.

i did some weight lifting when i was 16 and i regret it.. i think it stunted my growth because i didn't grow any taller after that age.. if i were you i would wait until 20. especially if you're gonna do squats and deadlifts.

I didn't grow any taller after I was 14 so... and I didn't weight train a day in my life until I was 17. People stop growing at different times, that's all.

yeah...and i dont think i'll stop growing so soon...i'm 6'4 now...and only 160lbs...sigh...and i do lots of dealifts too....

i dont see how weight lifting would have anything to do with your growth seeing as how getting taller mostly is about the bones and weight lifting is about the muscles.......and i started lifting when i was like almost 14 and now im 17. what is this i hear about muscles not being developed all the way and getting distorted muscle? hasnt happened to me in the least. i look huge and muscles look normal. id say its bs.

you'd be surprised just how much weight lifting involves the bones, but im not talking about stunting growth and premature closure of the bones (unless ones on the roids), but resistance training is very effective in preventing and minimising osteoporosis, a condition that wastes away the bones. Thus resistance training helps to keep, and improve bone density.

I started lifting when I was 18 and 9 months. I think most people are done growing when they are 18.

I am 6'4", barefoot, as well. I was 6'4" by the time I was about 16 or so. From that point to now, Im 19, I haven't grown. I am still 6'4". The only growing I have done is getting larger and filling out. That is bone and muscle growth. People stop growing taller at varied ages. Most people stop at around age 18 to 19 from what I've experienced, seen and heard. However, your bones from what I understand continue to grow until about the age of 25.
None of this means you should not lift weights. Lifting these heavy weights WILL NOT stunt growth or cause deformations in your muscles or anything like that. MANY people begin lifting as a teenager at ages of 16+ and have no problems with growth at all. If anything, a healthier lifestyle with lifting/exercise will help with this in my opinion. Do not, not lift because of that! Lift and lift some more, lol!!

i could not agree with ChrisH any more...my thoughts exactly
any form of exercise and right nutrition will do nothing to harm growth, exercise if anything will help growth. Genetics plays the key role in height. anywa, at 5'7", 17 yrs. old - i think height is way over rated, lol
my dad was my height when he was my age and he lifted weights earlier than i did as a kid, he did the rest of his growing a couple years out of high school....soooo there ya go
