HIIT Question

So I did HIIT for the first time yesterday I alternated between 3 mph for 1 min and 8.5 mph for 30 secs. I only did this 3 times as I didn't think I could do another 30 secs at 8.5 and I didn't know how I would feel the next day (today). I stretched afterwards and it felt REALLY good.

So, I'm not sore, at all today. Is this normal?

with HIIT, like any other exercise, soreness the next day is NOT the goal. It just happens when the muscles are put through things they are not used to.

The question is, when you were done...could you have kept going? If the answer is yes, then you didn't work hard enough. If you reached your limit and HAD to stop...then it was a successful HIIT session.

i was just expecting to be sore. i had talked to another person who did HIIT, they did 5 cycles, and he said he couldn't walk right for 2 days. just was expecting to be sore. as long as i didn't do something wrong, all is good. next time i do it, i'll aim for 4 cycles.

did it again today. had to go up to 9 mph to get my HR up high enough. still only 3 cycles though. it just exhausts me. walking up the hill to the dorm afterwards is a biatch as well.

we'll see if i'm sore tomorrow.

thats good if it exhausts you, doesnt mean youll hurt though. maybe you can try lowering the time of intervals, that way you wont burn out so quick and can go much longer? like 30secs - 9mph, then 30secs -3mph... you obviously could add more rounds, and prolly double your total time.

might try something like that Wednesday. have to see how the first cycle treats me. 30 sec recovery just sounds SOOOOOOOOOO short. we'll see.

i an completely SPENT for the rest of the night afterwards. i sure do sleep good though LOL

boy do i get weird looks doing it though. all the pounding from trying to slow down i think

oh, i also wanted to say that my legs feel different when i'm walking. not sore or fatigued, but more like i'm noticing my muscles working more now or something. i dunno. could be completely unrelated.

with a 30-30 split youll probably feel more refreshed every time you start to sprint again... thats how me n my buddy did it, and most people at my gym, they fake personal trainers all have them do 30-30's. it was damn effective for me, I was sweatin and drooling, had snot comming out of my nose, I dont do cardio, so anything will ware me out. Try doing your sprint on inclines, increasing the height each round. Or better yet, try doing your HIIT on the ladder climber thing if you have one. Killer.....

try 1 minutes running at 8.5, 1 minutes recovery running at 5-6mph (light jog)... do it 4-8 times depending on how you feel!

just a question on my HIIT routine.

5min walk/warmup
15min-20min HIIT
5min warmdown

so in total i am on the treadmill 20mins-30mins.

does this sound ok? Also when going flat out for 1min and resting for the following minute - do i walk or jog during this slow or resting minute? Or does it not matter aslong as the heart-rate decreases?

i am now thinking of ending gym membership and doing cardio HIIT at home instead. Can i achieve the same results with skipping? Otherwise i will have to take it to the streets and run like rocky balboa!

With the right intensity, you can perform a HIIT-style workout with just about any exercise activity. I personally believe running does the best job, but certainly skipping could get the job done. To be certain, I suggest burpees and wear a HR monitor.

Do you have stairs at home? If so, you could also run up the stairs, then walk down.

My favorite HIIT workout is to find a good hill.
Sprint up, walk down. (or jog)
It takes all the guess work out of it.

Of course, my enthusiasm for hill sprints is greatly affected by the weather. Too hot, too cold, too wet, too many snakes...
