hip problems from running

I just started running about a week ago. I'm starting slow doing about 1 mile everyother day but the day after I run my left hip feels like it's popping with every step I take. Any idea what is causing this? I was hoping to continue running to stay in shape and burn some fat. By the way I'm 19, 6 foot tall, 180 lbs and I'm in decent shape if that helps at all.

Thanks in advance,
Sven

How good are your shoes? Broken down arches or soles can put too much stress on the wrong part of your foot, causing an imbalance in your stride.

Pay attention to your footfalls next time you run. Are you turning your toes in/out, are your strides natural or choppy, are you coming down hard on your heels, etc.

Good shoes are very important. Another thing is your fitness to run. If you started with a mile, you are probably ready for it, but if it hurst you, you may need to ease into it. I had to start with about a 10 step run and a 1/4 mile walk. I gradually worked my way up to a 1 mile run and a 4 mile walk. I'm ashamed to admit that for the last month I've been rather slack about this and only hitting it 2 or 3 times a week.

Some people have to stick to a fast walk for the safety of the joints. You may want to ask your doctor if running is too harsh on yours.

Good luck with your effort...hope it works out for you.

if i were you i'd go and get some running shoes just for running. I'd go for a run everyday and if your hip gets worse ice it or go see a doctor. Thats what i'd do.

I wouldn't dismiss medical problems either. I have arthritus in my hips and I have to take anti-inflamatories and asprin the day after I run to keep the swelling and pain down.

Sven, do you run inside or out?

I do need a new pair of running shoes, but I don't think that they are the problem. Could having flat feet cause this problem, I don't have an arch at all? I run outside using a smooth stride. Maybe I'm not in good enough shape yet. It only affects my left hip, if it was caused by flat feet I would expect it to hurt both hips.

I think it may be that your not used to running yet. It takes time. Having no arch at all probably has something to do with it. Do you do plenty of stretching before you run?
