How long after sprained ankle..

Right before Christmas I sprained my ankle really badly. I see it as being twice as bad as the usual sprain because my friend was on top of me (wrestling) and I felt the whole bone in my leg bend. This feeling, was in fact the tendons stretching or peeling away from the bone.
A few days later the bottom of my foot was bruised, a week after that i had a ring of bruise around my shin, and right beside the ankle bone is a hard lump. It doesn't hurt normally, but if I straighten my foot out (parallel with leg) it hurts.

How long do you think it will be until I can run again? I am falling out of shape so fast.

Have you had a doctor look at it yet? They can tell you how serious the sprain is after poking at it a bit

It really depends though, took me about a month to fully recover from a minor sprain. I was able to go hiking during that time and do just fine on my own, but whenever I tried to run or attempted to do squats and deadlifts my ankle would bother me.

Yeah I've had it xrayed and had my family doctor look at it. He said I need to stay off of it but was very vague on a length of time.

Get a specialist to give you advice not your family doctor e.g. sports medicine doctor or physiotherapist. Ask specific questions like "how long until..., When will I know I can return to my reg. workout...? What will happen if...?" If you don't get an answer you are clear on ask them to explain it further.

If you've had a sprain that caused bruising, you'll need to heal it properly to reduce the scar tissue build-up. The lump is often low grade inflamation. Ignore it and it could lead to premature arthritis and limited range of motion without pain. BTDT

Stuff like strengthening the stabilisers is good while you are healing. Do you know what a BOSU is (it's like half a gym ball) ? It is used a lot for stabilization and balance. Standing on one leg on a pillow is good too. It is really important not to sprain it often or the tendons get stretched permanently.

You should get it checked out again if you can. Does icing it make it feel better? I was told to use pain as my guide and to always ice it if it hurts or is swollen. Also to do those stability exercises.

This is my first sprain, I may have had a couple as a child, but nothing like this. It doesn't cause any pain, but I haven't done any exercise since... I will try the standing on one foot on a pillow. How long do you reccomend, 5-10 minutes a day?
By the way, I'm from Peterborough
