How often should you change running shoes?

I do HIIT twice a week...and brisk walking on other days...
sometimes my shins and thighs KILL me when im done.

Some say its my running shoes(had em for 2 years), some say im overtraining and some say it could me my technique like not landing on my heels or etc.

I just wanted to know , as a general thought....how often should one change his shoes? I HAVE changed my souls inside of my running shoes with new ones and added a GEL sole to make it more comfy...it helped a bit but just some advice.

thanks

Hi

I think they need replacing. Also get them from a specialist running or sports shop where they can be fitted properly and avoid the 'fashion' brands.

I think it's a nice shoe. Are there better running shoes out there?

Hi

I dont which shops near you will fit your shoes, but avoid the "fashion type" Certain brands are better with certain types of runner so you will need to buy the right brand for your feet.

Some Nike shoes are good. Look at Asics, New balance and Reebok as well.

Go to a specialty running store. Tell them the type of activity you do and what they would recommend. They will take a look at your pronunciation (how your feet pronate) to determine the right type of shoe for you (making sure your feet get the proper support in the proper places). At that point, pick from the shoes they recommend that fits in your budget.

The best running shoes on the market are asics i work at a place called smiths sportshoes in napier new zealand and if shins and thighs are hurting after running or walking u need 2 have a treadmill analysis most places should do it 4 free u could have pronation of the foot or something like that and shoes should be replaced as soon as the writing on the soles has fully worn off

Its also a good idea to have two pair of running shoes and alternate between them if you are running alot. I read that somewhere in RunnersWorld magazine. Something about it lets the shoes completely dry out and makes each pair last longer individually.

Good advice! :

I had my gait assessed at the sport med clinic then went to a store for out door enthusiasts where the shoe staff are trainined in assessment (also the they do this at the runners boutique I shop at too). They directed me to the right type of arch and heel support in a couple of brands and at the right price point. I went with the Saucony's. They recomended 9 month to a year if I wear them every day (which I do from Apr-Nov.) They also showed me how to determine if the support is breaking down.

My feet are way happier now than when I would just guess.
