i went for a jog and now my knee is really sore!!!!!

so today i was headed to the gym for my workout to find it was closed early..so i decided to go for a run on the track near the gym..

I jogged around 6 times then walked 3 laps so i think that is 3.6kms

now my knee really hurts when i walk..i use to play rugby everyday and had to run on a track all the time with no injuries every..now after one run its hurts alot!

I usually go on the elliptical trainer when im in the gym but its been so nice outside ive been wanting to start running outside..

is running that much worse then training on the elliptical trainer?

should i stay away from running all together?

what can i do so this doesnt happen every time i run?

thanks

James, I really can't say if it's bad for you or not. When I first started running it hurt my knees and my back very bad. Then I acclimated to it and my knees got better. Back improved from better lifting habits.

I don't run now, but did feel good when I was doing it. One physician who I know insists that running is actually good for the knees. Running, not jogging. Of course he's a runner so his opinion may be biased.

A big part of making my own running less painful and more productive was getting running shoes that were specific to my feet. I probably tried on 30 pairs after they measured me at the shoe store and told me which ones to choose from.

The elliptical is likely to be much easier on the knees if they have problems though. No jarring and bouncing on them.

.
Thats exactly what I was going to say...make sure you are fitted for proper running shoes! If you are really interested in taking up running, find a specialty running store. There are well trained staff who will watch you run, and offer suggestions on what type of shoe will work best for the way you run and your foot. They should also ask if you will be running on a treadmill or outside and what kind of surfaces. best of luck!

Maybe it is from running on a round track? You might try alternating which direction you run on the track, if that's possible.
