I'm in the Army/A.I.T and I need help w/my sit-ups.
Hey all, some of u might remember me some don't. For those of u who don't let me give u a quick introduction... My name is Stephen, I'm 18, I'm joined the Army Reserves, I'm currently in Ft. Eustis (aka Ft. Useless) Virginia, I'm real homesick and I hate my company. : Well, I failed my physical fitness test recently. 43 pushups in 2 min., 53 sit-ups in 2 min., and a 2 mile run in 15:something is the min. requirements. Well I spanked the push-ups and run like nothing but the sit-ups kill me! I aquired only 50. I was so bummed out cuz this 4 day weekend I was locked down on base because of so. My next physical fitness test is this tuesday. Can any of you hook me up w/a schedule to accomplish more than 53 sit-ups by my deadline? If I don't pass it I get kicked out. I'm almost outta here too, July 1st is my graduation from A.I.T. so please help out, I'd hate it if I spent all this time just to get kicked out by a simple p.t. test.

These are full sit-ups and not just crunches (raise the shoulder blades). I beleive it is more of a mental game. Just block everything out and do as many as you can, as fast as you can.
psst. . . . I remember ya. You have good lookin' abs. Pretty lean.

Full sit-ups? ****... I'm going to Annapolis this summer... anyone know what you have to be able to do there? As regards sit-ups, how can you keep your feet down if you have to go from a laying position to a sitting position with nothing to grab your feet on?

someone holds your feet.
situps, pushups and a 1.5 mile run i think are navy standards.
i dont know why you want to go there, just go to a normal school and do rotc. youll actually have somewhat of a life.
skinnyguy: the only way you get better at military PT is do a lot of it.

guitarman are you actually trying to talk someone out of going to Annapolis (Naval Academy)?? That is one prestigious college and very selective too. You would have to have a VERY sweet deal and a healthy dislike for the military to not want to go there! ROTC and an Academy ring just don't have the same sway.

53 in one minute should be cake for someone with your build , much easier if you have 2 minutes to do that in.

You could try training solely w/weighted situps. Then, once you remove the weight, regular situps should seem like a breeze.
Just a thought.

Well I mean if your thing is shining shoes and acting like a robot for a year, then having a bedtime for the next three years, then by all means go to an academy. I'm saying this because my father went to west point and I myself went to a military school as well. He is now a Col and he says these days just because you have a ring doesnt mean you can get promoted are assigned positions based on that. Now the military cares more how you perform in training. The marines they dont even care how you get the comission but how you perform at the officer basic school.
No doubt this guy feels very motivated about the military and thinks "oh man if i go to an academy ill be so awesome." but if you can get into an academy, you can get a full-ride rotc scholarship. then you can actually have a life and do military stuff.

what i did in BMT ( air force, much easier i know, thats the only thing i hate) was i would just burnout, lay there for 10 seconds, BO, 10sec, BO. i would do that till i could ony do like 3 or 4 then wait a few minutes and do it again maybe 3-4 times. give it a try and see how you like it. i thought it worked pretty well.

Standard army situps work the hip flexors as much, if not more than, abs. Leg lifts might help some, as well as static holds.
One that also helped me quite a bit was lying on my back with a buddy standing by my head. Lift your legs up, then have him "throw" your legs back down and to the sides. Helped me increase my situps quite a bit.

This is a late response but might as well share the good news. I passed the P.T test w/great results.
80 pushups in 2 minutes
79 situps in 2 minutes
12:15 minute 2 mile run
Now I'm home and I must admit I'm losing my discipline and bearing greatly. It's a weird stage I'm going through but it's part of growing up because I'm realizing what I'm doing wrong and fixing it.

Great job man. My max on pushups was 99 in 2 minutes at PLDC. I never could reach 70 on situps. I was always weak on situps. I think my fastest two miles was at AIT at 13:14, if I remember correctly. Was probably 14:13. Heck, that was 20 years ago.
If you're smart, keep working out so you don't lose your edge for your future PT tests. I always hated PT tests. Aside from PT, I never worked out, so about a month before a PT test, I would start getting ready for it hoping I would do well. It's really nice staying in shape so when PT test time comes around, you don't have to do anything to get ready for it while others are busting their humps!
If you're losing your discipline, find a reason and a purpose to your workouts. If you don't have an overall goal, it's hard to stay motivated. My goal for weightlifting is keeping the weight off that I have lost and having a body that I have never had before. My main motivation was being diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. My main goal for running is running competitive races in my area. It's a great way to support worthwhile causes and I primarily "compete" with those in my age group, 40-44. My main motivation for running, again, is the diabetes. Although not everyone has a medical motivation, that's why it is important to have a goal and motivational purpose to your workouts. It keeps you disciplined and focused.
Again, great job on the PT test.
