Joint pain

Hi all,
I cannot do most chest/tricep exercises due to joint pain in my elbow. Please, do you have any other suggestions for exercising the chest/arm muscles? Perhaps chest press on a bench doesn't bother me nearly as much, but the machine hurts. The only tricep exercise I can do is the cable, but not that causes a lot of pain also. I want to do them but it just hurts.

Consider dynamic visualized resistance (DVR) exercises. The Summer 2007 Discuss Fitness newsletter has an article on bodyweight-only training which includes a discussion of DVR exercises.

You can take any traditional weightlifting exercise and perform it DVR-style which is much more joint and tendon friendly. And you can create your own level of visualized resistance, from light to maximum. Takes some practice to get good at but just might be what the doctor orders.

You won't be able to fully work out you arms without any elbow flexion. As for chest, the only movement I can think of is some type of fly movement (either with cables or dumbells)

If you have no medical issues, and if you are new to lifting it could be you are lifting too heavy. When I first started back my second workout I lifted too heavy for my joints and connective tissue and my elbows killed me for about a week. I backed off the weight and gave the stablizers and connective tissue a chance to adapt some and I've been fine ever since... Just a though
