jump rope and safety
Hi all,
I've been jump roping 3 times a week, for 20 minutes, in intervals, with minutes of rest in between.
I read it's better to NOT wear shoes for this...does anyone know the truth?
Also, I jump rope in the driveway, which does not have any "give". I can't jump rope in the street. Should I get a mat and jumpe rope on that?
Also, the back of my lower legs have been sore and stiff lately, its the area right behind my ankles. I wonder what this could be, from jump roping...and how to prevent it?

Well, I don't jump rope (I'm woefully uncoordinated) but I would think it would be better to wear shoes to support and cushion your feet.
Also, I think jumping on concrete would be bad. I would get a mat, or jump on the lawn or indoors on a wood floor is ok if that's an option.

JK Try buying boxing sparing boots and maybe use a mat or old off cut of carpet to cushion the inpact

Training in your bare feet can give an added benefit of strengthening your tendons, ligaments, muscles all over your lower legs.
However, you can over do it. And picking the proper surface is important.
Concrete=No. Rocks=No. Bed of Nails=No.
Grass=yes. Sand=probably. Asphalt=Probably not.
Carpet= Depends. Mat=maybe, but might slip and cause even more problems.
I'd switch back and forth from shoes to not for awhile, then go for full pedal nudity.

Hey JayKay,
I used to jump rope in wrestling shoes which are quite comfortable because they are light. I wouldn't recommend jumping rope without shoes. It's better to have a little something to take out the impact from jumping.
