Just Started Situps

I am very sore in my stomach right now from the ones I did yesterday, when I try to do some more it is very painful because I am so sore...do I ignore the pain and continue doing them regardless? I'm not trying to get abs but just trying to lower my big belly

don't get a hernia. don't do situps when you're in a lot of pain. you could get a hernia and that won't be pretty.

if you want to lose your belly, doing situps won't help you much. you could do as much as you want but that fat is not going anywhere unless you do cardio and aerobic and maybe some anaerobic exercises.

now the question becomes: What type of cardio exercises should I do and when and how long?

Also consider not doing situps, and looking into crunches....they are much better for abdominal endurance / anabolism and will target your middle section a lot more.

That is a load of crap, not good advice at all. Why would you want to wait to have muscle in your abs? Thats like saying, I'm going to cut first, then worry about getting a nice chest and nice arms. Get the muscles now in your abs while burning off the fat and you'll be able to see a nice six pack as soon as your BF is low enough.

I dont think its beneficial to do any exercise for a body part that is still sore. I simply cant lift as much when I'm sore, and I dont think you should be breaking down the muscle more than it actually is.

Jgriff, didnt we just have this conversation about MY abs?

Id also like to add, why are you doing abs back to back days anyway?? Once a week is fine for abs.

Actually, abs are good to do *every day*. They're really the only muscle that you can work every day, though. They increase your speed and overall ability to run.

Doing 30 or 40 crunches is perfectly good, every day. The key is to work the muscles and make sure you get as much as possible out of each rep (as opposed to just doing the repetitions). But don't expect it to give you a 6 pack all by itself... You still have to do the cardiovascular exercise and you still need the good diet.
