How much of your/our fitness intent is focused on the "now" ... you know, getting that six-pack cookin' in time to hit the beach in summer? In contrast, how much thought goes into the long run. "What am I going to be like when I'm ten years older ... or twice (or three times ) my current age?"

Good question. I think short-term in my fitness goals but your post will challenge me to think past the upcoming year.
I'll be dead in 2 times my current age so maybe I'll carry my goals to age 70 to stimulate my thinking. How about not crapping my pants until age 90 for starters?

Watching long lived people, I've decided that if you train now the way you will when you are 90, you will be training at 90 the same as you are now. That would be a good thing to claim.
I like to look forward to yrs more training, but as i age i pull more injuries than a Kenworth hulling logs.
So i just know i will always train to my best ability on that day.
We are only as good as our last workout.
I am looking at things in long term all together with 60 + lbs to loose until I get to my target weight I am looking long term. But I think about today, what I am eating today what I am doing at the gym today. So I think all in all I am looking at long term goals but keeping a sharp eye on the today.
Long term over the course of 30, 40 and how many more year I have -I see myself attempting to stay fit once I get to taht point. I wanna be that old guy still moving iron in his 60 and 70's.

95% of my goals are focused on the here and now, or at least the next few years. Legit MMA isn't exactly a long term, maintainable activity into your later years. Not unless your name begins with a "R" and ends in a "andy Couture". The benefits that come from this training though will undoubtedly carry over into any future endeavors.
Right now my goals are definately short term in the sense that I'm looking to get myself back into shape by deadline for our contest here at DF. But I do think about wanting to be fit for the rest of my life and continually doing new things and not letting my age or lack of fitness stop me.
