My new running goal

Well I have decided that before I apply to the police, I want to be able to run a 10km (6.2mile) course in under 42 minutes. Thats not overly quick, but it is a decent speed IMO. In order to achieve this, would it be OK for me to run/walk for 10km/6.2m every second day? I would run and walk it, and eventually work my way up to running the entire way. Would this be an OK way to train? This is outside I plan to do this as well. Please ask for clarification if I have not explained this properly...thanks.

The best way to train for running is of course running. If I were you, however, I would build my way up to 10km, not try to do it all at once. Try running at least 3 miles at a decent pace without stopping. Build up the distance little by little. I think that if you attacked the track running the whole thing from the beggining, one - you wouldn't be able to see fast gains, and two - it would be boring. I find that mixing in other forms of cardio can help too. A variety always helps in fitness. Try jumproping, swimming laps or 200 m sprints. Before you know it you'll be running the 10 km like it's nothing.

And it's good to know I've got a fellow metallica fan on the boards.

One of the easiest ways to train for a marathon is to use a combination of walking and running. Many people have used this method with great success. So walking/running the distance will help you reach your goal.

42 minutes is a very respectable time for a 10K. You might want to throw in at least one day of interval training (sprint for 1/4 mile, walk for 1/4 mile) each week.

Whether this is OK depends on what you have been doing. That's a lot of distance each week if you are just starting out, even if you walk some of it.

Ok, thanks for all the help. I thought about it, and will start lower. I have been running on a treadmill for a while now, and don't like it. I would rather run outside where I am going to have to eventually if I get hired. I will start with less distance, and work my way up. Thanks for all the help guys.
