Need lower back excercise tips

Hello everyone...

Every now and then my lower back tends to bother me. I was told there were excercises to help strengthen your lower back.

Can anyone share some excercise tips with me for my lower back?
Thanks in advance.

Make sure you warm up very well, lower back is a delicate area. However gradual weight increases in your deadlifts can do wonders for your back, it depends what you mean by 'bother you' though; for example if you mean you have an injury then deadlfits could be very dangerous, but if you mean it botheres you because it doesn't look very good or it is not very strong then .......... get deadlifitin bro!

If you do deadlifts, make sure to understand the proper technique in doing them, or else injury may be just around the corner. Any back exercise...bent-over rows, T-bar rows, hyper-extensions, even squats will help make your back stronger, given you are doing them correctly.

Thanks guys...
As far as my back bothering me, i've had problems with it for years. I think it comes from all the years i've done janitorial jobs, light maintenancel and retail(heavy lifting, being on your feet all day etc..) in my pre-professional years (lol). ....and along the way I have done some improper lifting during those younger(more stupid) days.

So I guess you would say that I have a weak lower back that is prone to injury.

Antony.

Did deadlifts yesterday, and my back is sore! today. But in a couple of days, it will be back to normal, only for me to go through it all again next week.

Hey cursor, good to hear from you.
I've been busy with the business and hunting season. Things are pretty much back to normal now.

thanks Jalopy..

I've been doing deadlifts from time to time...but have read in some books and articles that performing deadlifts with a bad/weak lower back can do more harm than good.
I guess it's the amount of weight that you put on it. I don't apply that much weight when I do deadlifts. The most that I apply is like 70 lbs. I don't know if I should increase or not. Like I said, I just have this overall fear that I will seriously injur my back.
So is light weight better than nothing at all?

Thank you for that piece of info, iluvhockey....... There may be some truth to that. When I was in a relationship, I never had any trouble with my lower back(hehehe)..
ANYWAY......

My main concern is that I want to really develop my legs without re-injuring my lower back. I sometimes find that I have lower the weight in order to accomodate my back in SOME excercises(like squats, deadlifts, and leg presses). But I want to really bulk up my legs but need some tips on how I can do this with a weak back.

Anthony,

Glad you posted this, I have a similar situation to you. Any more feedback would be great. I have limited equipment at home and can't afford a gym membership. I have dumbells in 5 lb increments to 35 lbs and a 300 lb olympic weight set with a bench. I have always been afraid to do squats and dead lifts.
Is there a site that gives graphic illustrations of proper form?

For exercise descriptions and illustrations, check here.

For lower back I would suggets working on your entire midsection. Trunk stability is very important when doing the big exercises and you really shouldn't try them on if you have lower back problems. Try some non-weighted, static hold exercises to build up the static endurance necessary (your lower bakc shouldn't work dynamically in the squat and very little in the deadlfit really) using horses and boards. That'll strengthen your trunk all around, allow you to start working your lower back and abs more directly, and prepare you for leg and back work.
