New here, about my routine (long read)

Hello, just registered.
I'm trying to get myself back into shape. I had always led a very active lifestyle, but things have slowed down for me. I no longer do all the outdoor activities I used to, and my job takes up so much time, I ballooned a bit. First time I REALLY noticed was I bent over to pick something up and the donut that attached itself to my waist made the elastic of my boxer shorts fold over. At that point I realized I needed to do something. I'm 6', 27 years old and I weighed about 208lbs. I started doing a work out routine 3 weeks ago and I do it daily.

Onto my workout routine and hopefully you can tell me if I'm not doing enough or what.

First off... I've cut lots of heavy foods out of my diet. No more deep fried, breaded stuff, ice cream, cakes, cookies... etc etc. This made me feel better already. I didn't eat a lot of junk food before but I was definitely a cookie monster.

The workout is 30-40 minutes a day in the evening after work. I do this every day (weekends included).

Treadmill - I do a half mile total. My asthma keeps me from pushing myself too hard and if I go too hard I either choke or cause my esophogus to bleed which is really unpleasant. I've dealt with it all my life and even earlier in my life I would just spit out the blood and keep going. The doctor informed me though that it causes scarring and that can be worse than the asthma itself.
The first 1/8th I warm up / walk fast. Then I run @ 7.5mph slightly inclined to the quarter mile mark. Walk fast again for another 8th than run at about 6.5mph to the half and typically I'll have to walk another 1/8th to cool off. By the end my heart rate is around 165-170, I'm sweating bullets and breathing hard. If I keep at it, it makes my asthma to "go away" to an extent but it takes some doing. It would always hit me when I would MTB on some hard trail. I would have to stop for a min and then continue on with a second wind. If I just try to push through it without a quick break I could easily pass out.

Heavy Bag - I have a really stressful job, and the heavy bag was bought originally to keep me from flying off the hook and putting my fist through various walls and inanimate objects. It worked and it feels great. It's the best stress release I've ever had and it's my favorite part of my workout. I go at the bag for about 2 to 3 - 3 min rounds with a little break and water inbetween. It's toughened up my hands significantly. For the first week my hands would swell after using it but now they don't, I could even not use the gloves if I chose to now. It's lots of fun and I'm learning better how to throw good punches which could come in handy if I ever got assaulted I guess.

Total Gym - Chuck Norris uses it... so should I? I have a lot of fun on this machine. The excersizes I do on it are butterfly, skull bash w/crunch, curl w/incline crunch and backhand extension both left and right. I do about 25 reps of each at a pretty high resistance. It kicks my rear pretty good.

After that I'm done and I go shower. I didn't really weigh myself in the beginning because I didn't own a scale. But I guessed I weighed around 208 because of my last physical was around there. I bought a scale though and I now weigh 202lbs which is pretty cool. I'm glad I lost weight.

I'm wondering if there is some way I can supplement my diet better. Right now I take nothing. No vitamins at all. I'm also allergic to several things, but most damaging is Beef/pork. I can eat poultry and fish no prob but any beef or pork will leave me in hives for a week.

I also wonder if I'm doing enough or if I should possibly extend my workout to like 60 minutes a day? May do 30min and take 5 minute break and try another 30min? I would be pretty beat up but it's a great feeling at the end of a workout. It's a real natural high, breathing in all the oxygen. I'm really enjoying it.

Well thanks for reading my long post if you've made it this far. Let me know what you think.

First advice is, everyone has different advice! lol Differing opinions in the fitness industry are as prevelant as there is water in the ocean. Seeing that you have a medical condition also, that can be added to how tough finding the right things for your body are. As far as equipment, if a Total Gym is what you have, then by all means use it. You should be able to find a few exercises per bodypart to do for some kind of split throughout the week. If you are looking to just be "fit", then look into circuit training also. It's a great cardio and toning workout plan. I have to say, congratulations on cutting out all the sugar and crap! : That's not easy to do and that alone will start to help drop the weight. You've already lost 6lbs. it seems and you are on the road to fitness so, keep it up! Any work you do for yourself is going to help more than not at all. I would never presume to be an expert in fitness but some things remain true no matter who you are and that is eating clean and healthy and getting exercise are both givens to fitness. I know this was a very vague post but I really would hate to say exactly what you should do per your conditions. I'll leave that to the dr.s and more trained professionals. As far as encouragment though, you are on your way! Congratulations again and keep things rolling!
