Question

Not Sure Where to Begin

Hi, I am 19 and am having a hard time finding a site to tell me what excersizes would be good for building endurance, flexability, strength and muscle tone.

When I was 14, I was diagnosed with endometriosis. Prior to my diagnosis, I was an extremely active tomboy but, due to being bed ridden for weeks at a time, my endurance, flexibility and strength faded.

I need some good advice as to either sites online, where to start or what excersizes to try because up until the past few years, I haven't had to try to be thin. Due to my illness, which is now under control, my metabolism slowed down and I've gained a lot of weight. I'm learning how to eat sensibly but I need to know what I can do in forms of excersize to assist in this attempt.

I am already researching yoga and tai chi but need some other leads. I am moving soon to a safer neighborhood so walking everyday will become habit. I currently weight 185lbs and I'm 5'2". My goal weight is around 130lbs.

Please help, I am dedicated to getting back in shape and want to feel even better about my body than I already do. Any advice would be most welcome.

For overall fitness and fat loss, you need to combine resistance training, cardio, and a good diet. Yoga and tai chi will be great for flexibility, now look into weight training for strength, and some form of cardio for endurance and help with the fat burn. I favor high intensity interval training myself, but then I bore very easily. The biggest rule with cardio is "do something you like"- be it running, swimming, boxing, or a high-energy martial art.

Look around the threads, there are a LOT of good ones relating to training routines and diet.

The most important thing to do is get started.

You can do what you put your mind to, I am 48 and never thought I could do it, but I am doing great, and you can too. I am not perfect, nor am I 100% in my eating program, but I am definitely headed in the right direction.

In the past 6 months I have lost about 35 lb., and my body fat is down from over 25% to about 15% now. I am 171# and 5' 10". I accelerated my fitness program over the past 9 weeks by joining a gym and going there every day for cardio, and I do resistance training 2 or 3 times a week. You can see the fat melt before your eyes!

I've already started

by practicing yoga every morning and I take a 10 minute brisk walk around my building at work while on one of my breaks. My legs ache but, I know it's only because I'm not used to it yet.

I've started my eating program...trying to get a good amount of each food group while cutting back on the starches and sugars. I'm already feeling better, more energized and am noticing small differences only after about a week now.

I'm moving in the next two weeks to a "safer" neighborhood and once there, I'm going to be walking every day. My room mate is also a member of a gym so I'll probably go join there so we can work out together. It's always easier, at least for me, when I have someone doing it with me.

Thursday, I'm going with a friend to take a five mile hike which should be a lot of fun.

Well, here's to good health!
