Oil Rig Fitness Testing..

hey everyone.

I have very recently started working in the oil patch ruffnecking and just had to do a physical witch was similar to a cross fit type exercise.

my main disadvantage is that I only wiegh 155lbs at the moment and most the guys there were about 200lbs so needless to say the generic weigh selected for everyone were much closer to my own body wieght.

we had to put heart rate monitors on during the testing and my heart rate peaked at 197bpm while the next closest persons heart rat peaked and 180. now i'm wondering is having a max heart rate the high considered unhealthy or does that mean my heart is in good condition?

I wasn't even that winded (at least not compared to most the other people) is this just to to the fact i'm much lighter and lifting the same amount of weight or should I start doing cardio more??

i'v never used a heart rate monitor and was quite suprised to see my bpm's go so high.. good or bad?

also has anyone hear ever worked for an oil company that does physical testing and if so what did you thing of their testing metheds

thanks in advance to all the reply!

I am a HR monitor junkie so I offer my experience.

Having a maximum HR that high is not necessarily considered unhealthy, nor does it necessarily mean that your heart is in good condition, but you are likely in good condition. Some important measures would be what is your resting HR (the HR when you first awaken, still in bed and calm before the agitations of the day. And another important measure is your recovery period - what your HR measures 2, 3, 4 and 5 minutes after you have elevated it to near your max level. The faster your recovery the more cardio fit you are.

I don't have anything to offer in response to your other questions.

thanks perini. I had a feeling you would be one with some imput for me!

they let us take 1 minute breaks a couple times thoughtout the test and asked us what are bpm's were at the end of the 1 minutre rest period, although we had to squat down on and balance on the tips of are toes during the rest period so it was not a complettely relaxed state, but if i remember correctly my heart rate dropped from 197bpm's to 170 bpms in the 1 minute.

my assumtion is that my cardio could use a bit of improvment. what are your thoughts perini? is that a decent drop in bpm's in a minute in a semi relaxed position?

I am just really curious as I have never really used a heart rate monitor..
