Old wives' tale? Yes, No?

My mom always used to tell me that if you sucked your stomach in all the time, it would cause your muscles to firm up and in effect lose weight. Is this an old wive's tale or is there some truth to this?

There's an exercise called stomach vacuums that sounds like what you're describing but I can't say if they work or not, never tried them

Naaa, at the most it might tone your stomach, making it appear flatter..

but that wont make you loose weight

vacuums work for awhile, that is until your body adapts to them, there is no way i know of to add resitance to the exercise either, try doing hovers. get in a pushup positition and place your forearms on the ground supporting yourself on foreams and toes so yoru back is pararell to the ground. hold yourself up with your lowerback and abs, hold it for as long as possible.

resistance stomach vacuums — Get a belly-button ring ... hang a weight plate from the new ring ... bend over (like when doing barbell rows), then suck that gut in! Hold for a count of 30. Repeat for 10 reps. One set should do you in (psst ... watch out for tears/rips (and tears/crying).
