Problem Today

I am overweight. Around October of last year I decided to start eating better and excercising. For the excercises, someone suggested that I should sprint up and down stairs for a minute, then walk up and down stairs for a minute, and do that as many times as I could. I started with five sprinting sessions, and I got up to eight by the beginning of this month.

So far everything is going well. I lost about 20 pounds. Then I got some bad bronchitis and I couldn't run the stairs until I got better. A few days ago I tried, but my heart started racing before I even finished one sprint session. Today I tried again, and I forced myself to do three sprint sessions. My heart was going like crazy (at least 160 bpm). I started to pass out. My eyes were tearing. So I stopped. It's about a half hour later and I still feel a little woozy.

So, what should I do?

Welcome to discuss fitness.

congratulations on the weight loss you've accomplished so far. Now that you've proven to yourself that you can make a change perhaps you need to go about things a little differently. I would suggest simply starting with a good brisk walking program.

What are some of your stats like weight, height, gender, goals and time commitment to fitness and nutrition?

What other exercises do you do? You need a complete well-rounded diet and exercise program.

I agree with ed. You will need to include resistance training (lifting weights) and flexibility training (stretching).

It sounds like you have done great so far. How long ago did you have the bronchitis? If it's been awhile, and you're still having trouble, I would go back to the doc and make sure nothing else is going on.

I lift weights three times a week. I usually do benching and squats, then I do curls or pushpress.

Hello clavio and welcome to DiscussFitness.

I don't know your heart rate parameters, but 160 bpm is not anything to be concerned with for most people. I think you may not have totally recovered from your illness, given that you were performing this workout prior to getting sick.

My suggestion is that you start an Online Journal and join our great community. Start posting your workouts with good detail. Others here will get to know you better and you will get to know us too. You'll get great feedback and support, and some good training ideas.

I believe your goals are realistic so the real question is: how bad do you want it?

We will help you in any way we can.

p.s. I'd stick with the stairs or someting equivalent. Pedal to the metal training is how you will accomplish your goal.
