Pushups and crunches

I'm 5'10, 145lbs. I am trying to gain some weight and some muscle, and was wondering how usefull pushups and crunches were.

How often should I do them? How many at a time?

Pushups are good. I think there are better things to do with your fitness training time than crunches.

You'll need to give more background about your fitness goals before the rest of your questions can be answered, but it is fair to say for me that you'll need more than pushups in your training mix.

If you don't have access to a gym or weights you can do bodyweight work instead for a while.
Pushups
Pullups
Walking lunges
Burpees
And yes...crunches too. Not really needed but don't hurt.

Also you can do dips between two chairs to hit your triceps (and chest a little)

Do your pushups nice and slow (not army-grunt fast) to failure, and switch up your hand position between sets (closer together or farther apart, a little more forward, a little more back). When you can't do any more with your legs straight, put your knees down and do as many more reps as you can -- 'till you end up cheek to cheek with the floor :-)

You should really be pumped after three or four sets.
