Rowing machines can contribute to a great workout -- the whole body is recruited (as opposed to a stationary bike). Lady C & I just bought a Concept II stationary rower.
The rowing machine is great for a short and intense workout following the Tabata cadence.
Warmup for 4 minutes, then do Tabata (20 seconds max effort with 10 seconds recovery for 8 rounds = 4 minutes), then spend another 2 minutes in a cool-down. This is a great 10 minute workout.

Let me tell ya that is the truth! These things kick my butt all the time! It is always fun to keep your time and distance though to have a goal to beat next time :
I just got hooked on rowing 6 months ago and it's a great workout. 2000m sprints, 30/60 minute distance rows, etc are almost addicting when trying to get better and beat old distances/times. Get someone to help out with proper form if you know anyone who uses the machines regularly or do some reading because there are ways to make yourself more efficient on the machine with even small adjustments/technique.
Too bad that video does not go on to show what that "distinctive sound" of the C2 is when you are rowing right. I've heard it but only in a live demonstration from a trainer, not in any video.
The other thing it lacks is a demonstration in detail for any length of discussion of the correct rowing technique. This one is not bad.
Of course there is this other one which rufiedog posted which most guys could watch over and over.
