Serious Treadmill Issues
Hi all.
Just before winter started my girlfriend bought a treadmill so she could do some faster pace walking in the house without worrying about the freezing temperatures. Since she has been using it, she has had a serious pain in her side that would actually make her stop walking for a week or so. We rubbed Thero-gesic (like icy hot) near where her pain was, which actually made it better. Since then if she uses the treadmill, she will occasionally get this pain in the side. She doesn't, however, get this while walking outside. She slowed down the machine, did not use the incline on the teadmill, but still having this problem...any ideas?

abdominal pain could be any of a hundred things, so I recommend she see her doctor to rule out anything serious, like appendicitis. If it's just a strained oblique or something minor like that, the only thing that will heal it is time.
Definitely see the doc if it isn't changing/going away.

She went to the doctor and she also had a urinary track infection(sp?) that m,ay have also been making it worse, also some anti-inflamatory pills but this pain in her side still acts up every now and then after she uses the treadmill. She took off 3 weeks without using it and it came backl the first time she did a fast paced walk for 25 minutes

Can you describe more precisely where the pain is and whether the pain is sharp (pinpointed) or dull?

The pain is just above the right pelvic bone, and goes just to the right of her naval. She says it isnt a sharp pain but more of a throbbing pain. It seemed to help when i rubbed thero-gesic on her backside of the pain, meaning just above her glute. The last time the pain lasted for a week, she says the thero-gesic helps it a little...ibprofen didnt help at all neither did motrin

My initial thought is that she is probably walking a little faster than she does outside walking around the block and probably stretched a muscle farther than she would normally

It's hard to imagine what might be causing that sensation ... just walking. As an experiment, she should try walking outside (although cold) instead of the treadmill ... explicitly trying to mimic the treadmill pace (an possibly even a bit faster, even). If and when she starts to feel pain, SLOW the pace (and take mental note).

Have you checked that the treadmill is level? If the walking surface is not level it can cause the user to walk with an imbalance we can lead to some muscle soreness.

Sounds like the kidney area or even an ovary. She may want to have the doctor do a more thorough review maybe an MRI to rule out any unseen issues.

Actually we are both worried that..we both hope it isnt a ovary problem.
The doctor didnt seem to think it is, so we have our fingers crossed.
Right now she isnt experiencing any pain at all, shes taking a break from the treadmill because we've had somewhat decent weather where we can walk outside

i tend to agree with luvutall if the doctors arent finding any issues. i used a treadmill for 2 months that had 2 magazines propped under the right side making it unbalanced. it would make my whole left side ache the next day, and just the left side, but mine was from my knee to my chest. it may not be that clear to you, but try with a level and see where the bubble lies.
