Shoulder Presses - Barbell, DB, Arnold ???

Hi again guys,

I have to admit, I love barbell shoulder presses, in front and behind the neck ( though if I do 2 sets in front, I only do 1 behind ). I've never tried dumbell presses, and I've no idea what ' Arnold presses ' are. As stated before, right now I'm looking for maximum mass gains. Any advice on which presses ( barbell in front, barbell in back, etc ) are known to bring better results?

I wouldn't touch behind-the-neck barbell presses unless you want to destroy your rotator cuffs.

I'm with Jock on this. The Arnold presses hurt my rotators a bit too. I do db shoulder presses, and they're great because they use a HUGE amount of stabilizer muscles in order to keep correct form. I do them seated usually.

I agree with the above statements about behind the neck barbell presses being bad for the shoulders. I personally love DB shoulder presses, but Arnold Presses kinda tweak my shoulder too. If you're looking for delt work, try DB side raises, DB rear lat raises, or even DB upright rows. The raises are used by alot of bodybuilders to get those big cannonball delts. Arnold does them in "pumping iron" and Ronnie Coleman does them in "the unbelievable".

Thanks for the replies.

Anyone got any links to illustrate the ' Arnold ' presses?

Start with your palms facing inwards towards your head, then as you move your arms up above your head twist your hands and arm so that your palms face outwards..... not got a link but thats how to do it.

Turn the palms out to the front, or side? I think I've seen this before.

I don't have any problems with behind the neck (or as we call them, military) presses. They don't bother my shoulders at all

Even if they're not hurting your shoulders now, behind the neck pressing is widely known to cause problems. Be careful.
