Sit-ups? Crunches? What can I do for my abs?

I have read here that several reps of crunches don't work (read a posted article).
Can someone please expand on this and set it straight for me? I do several crunches everyday in various ways (ie..left elbow to right knee, reverse curls etc...and I use the ab roller-which I call "the wheel of death")
And what is a good lat excercise with free weights? Can't do a lat pulldown so what should I do instead?
Thank you!

I saw somebody post this the other day and I was really impressed with the site.

This is the 'home page'

http://www.exrx.net/index.html

From there you can click 'exercise instruction'...then 'Exercise & Muscle Directory'...then pick a muscle...'Latissimus Dorsi' is about 10-15 down the left hand side. You can read all about that muscle and then click on 'exercises' at the bottom of that page and you'll get a list of exercises. This is a great site. When you click on an exercise it will show a demonstration of how the exercise is performed. So you can follow the same path for any muscle.
Without the capability to do 'lat pulldown' you have to find some way to do chin up/pull up and then supplement that with rowing exercises. Lat pulldown is one of the 'staples' of resistance training in my opinion.
