Skipping Rope Length?

I've recently bought a skipping rope that is adjustable. Problem is it's a permanent adjustment as I have to cut off the excess. I've never skipped before so I don't want to start hacking it up then once I get a little better discover I've cut off too much. Is there a simple equation I can do to work out optimal length? Also, does anyone know of any sites with lots of info about how to skip, do fancy skipping, learn etc etc. Thanks!

Put around the middle under your feet and pull the ends up by your sides. It should end at about your armpits on each side.

you can tie knots near the handle to temporarily adjust length. this will help find a good setting before you cut.
