I think ice works best.
Advil/Aleve/Tylenol should keep the swelling down, every 4 hrs.
Do that for the next 2 days, that is your best hope of healing faster.
I usually heat it then a couple times a day. I just keep the ole heating pad near the bed and use it watching the TV at night, and when I'm comming out of my morning comma.
I did the same thing doing SLDL's a few months back.
Hope that helps.

What do you think about continued lifting (specifcally for the lower back)—reduce the weight, lay off all together ... ?

I pretty much skipped any direct back for a least a month. It was not much more than an annoyance. A little twing. But I could tell it was there doing trap work or squats.
It's been a month since then and I'm back close to the same thing. I hurt my self doing 315, I can do 295 no problem now. I'm just a tad more cautious for some reason. So I don't think you lose much strength. If you REALLY hurt your back, you surely will.
What'd u hurt? Any clue?

Thanks for the input, Fudo.
I'm not sure exactly what I hurt. I'll certainly do some research. I hurt it (lower back, left side, about kidney location, sharp pain) upon lowering the deadlift barbell on the second rep of my last set I made the sorry mistake of allowing my back to arch slightly. I quit immediately, took two Aleve and went for about a 30 minute walk. I applied ice on my return from the walk (off and on for the next two hours).
I'm sure that I'll be OK, but I always like to treat an injury properly. In this case, I will obstain from stressing it further until it heals.

That sucks, cursor. Hope you are better at giving it time to heal than I am.

the medicines along with the ice and heat, you'll know whether you can train at all as soon as you pick up a weight.
if it doesn't heal, see a massage therapist, one who can get in there deep may take a few weeks it will help

I think Iron removed a vertebra cause it was slowing him down. Needed something to challenge himself. Nutty man.

uh, well ... ouch.
I was to have done deadlifts today. I obviously refrained. I was able to successfully do cable rows and lat pull-downs—no problem at all. I'll be back in the money before ya know it ( pun intended).

Don't know if you saw the "back link" in my journal.
It looks like you strained your semi-spinalis. Well, that'd be my arm chair guess. Have a peek.

Thanks for the link. I think, more probably, I've strained my quadratus lumborum (with its lower origin at the lliac crest—top of the rear hip).
Another armchair guess
