I'm betting it's not as stupid as he says it is. The camera shot is low, from about the height of his shoulders. With a telephoto lens, the foreshortening effect will make the rim behind him appear closer than it really is. Also, if you look close, the plant in the lower right of the photo is actually the trunk of a dead tree some distance behind him, (telephoto foreshortening) indicating that he is not on the edge of a three thousand foot precipice, but just on a small ledge with another much wider ledge below it. A tumble off might cause him some damage, but not make him a grease spot a thousand yards down on the canyon floor. The photo was taken over 40 years earlier. I'd say his memory of the actual scene is either a bit selective, or he just wants to make a point to discourage copycats.
