how affective is swimming and how long should i be swimming for a good workout?

Swimming is an excellent workout. A close second to running.

The only problem with swimming is it is hard to judge the intensity. Why? Because you don't feel the effects of gravity as much. If you are getting good results, I would say your intensity is fine.
