Right, that can also be used to do such things as db presses, overhead presses, glute ham raises, pull-overs some people even squat standing on them. If they were intended solely for "balance and strenghthing" why do some have a burst resistance up to 1000 lbs, kinda overkill don't ya think? You can do just about anything on the good ones and feel safe.

Alright tee, if you feel that you are comfortable using the ball go for it. But being burst resistance of 1000 lbs. Let's face it we are not all 98 lbs soaking wet. Who is it tested by? Careful advertising often is misleading. Natedogg you have pushed the envelope a slight bit too far. I would love to see someone doing squats on them. See ya soon in a wheel chair. I am wondering if you are really aware of what is required to use the ball.

Squat on stability ball.
http://www.sissel-online.com/exercis...s_ball_pro.php
I have also seen them done weighted. Would I try it? No way, because it would take tons of practice and increidble balance to be able to do.
I guess we'll all see that guy in a wheelchair soon huh?
No human using a stability ball would have to worry about bursting a 1,000 lb rated ball. I believe they are tested by machines that put measured pressure on them until they burst.

I purchased one of these and its quite difficult to perform some of the excercises. Which is good!
The ab and lower back workouts you can do are awesome. I can do leg lifts, reverse weighted situps, crunches and all kinds of stuff and barely get the burn that I feel from doing the stability ball. And the stability ball stuff doesn't take me as long. It's really hard to maintain balance, now I see why it is such a good tool to build muscle!

Al Rightee, The good part about the ball is that you have to experiement with it. Stabilizing and balance are what your after. The muscle groups that you use on the ball are different than the ones you might use to do any standing or sitting excercise. One of the main reasons is that you now have a bouyance as you do when you swim in a pool. The air is what does it. I have suggested that you might want to take a course at the Y or your local community centre. Boys and Girls club might just have an instructor. They might give you pointers if you show that you are really interested in learning, for free. Your firestation have fitness buffs too, try there. You school coach might find it interesting and decided to put it in with your gym classes, sell it to them. Just a thought, have you given much thought to what you are training for. Gymnastics, football, swimming, etc. As all these sports require different training so decided on what you want to do. Get some ideas talk to people that are in the sports. You might also want to drop into the gyms or sports clubs and see what's happening ask if you can train with them. Usually when you have your gear with you they will agree. Try it all and see what you really like. Weight lifting can be pretty boring unless you have a plan and that you do a variety of activities. Give it a try. It's like chicken soup, it wouldn't hurt. BFN
