How long it lasts depends on the severity and how effectively you treat it. In an area like your hands it can be especially difficult because you will probably find it hard to rest the injured area completely. Daily, mild aggravation of the injury resulting from normal activity can prolong the problem. I had a severe case of tendonitis asociated with my thumb and it bothered me for months. Even mild cases, though, take longer than a few days.
Tendons are not like muscles - their access to the nutrient supply is almost nonexistant so repair comes slowly. If it hurts more than just a little bit after exercise then you did too much too soon.
