The benefits of total fitness

I thought I'd give you guys an idea of why I love the total fitness style. I haven't done gymnastics in years but I still love to tool around with some of the stuff I used to be able to do, sort of a way to gauge where I am in my fitness level.

Give it a try and see how you do.

Awesome planche! I've just started working on that myself, and I have a long way to go...I'm still having trouble with the frog stand. Here's a good article about planche progressions, in case anybody is interested:

Why is a planche a mark of "total fitness?"

That link is insane. The kid doing those exercises is like a super-strong ape boy!

Because it's really hard to do. It takes tons of upper body strength, great ab and back muscles, balance, total-body awareness, and (since you're meant to hold it for up to a minute at a time) endurance.

Agreed, it takes a full body awareness because your whole body is flexed at once. It's having the muscle to do the hold but being lean enough so you don't weigh too much. It's how I gauge how fit I am, if I can't do a planche I get my ass into the gym till I can.

Also, doing presses, which is where you stand with your feet about three feet apart and straight, you put your hands on the floor in front of you arms straight and press up to a handstand without bending arms or legs. That takes balance and core stength.

It may be a good way to gauge your fitness but you forget that not everyone has your corrdination and balance. It looks cool though and I do know how strong you have to be to perform it.

Anyone can intentionally improve their coordination and balance. It's a matter of practice and determination ... like anything else.
