The heavier you are the easier it is to lose weight?

I have made an observation over the last couple of years and I am just curious what you guys think or know about the topic. I currently work with someone who has had AWESOME results in the weight watchers program. She has lost about 50 pounds this year and looks like a different person. I have so much admiration for the people who are self deciplined to do something like this. I am curious though, I keep hearing about people who are very overweight losing large ammounts of weight but I see people that are not overweight, more active, work out more, and have similar diets that dont lose any weight. I would think that fat loss is fat loss..... An overweight person could eat the same diet week after week and have the same work out habits week after week and would lose 2 lbs a week every week until the person is cut and with great muscle definition. This does not seem to be the case. I have noticed that people that have maybe a half inch to an inch of fat over their abs that are very active in sports and work out on a regular basis that dont lose much at all. Does your body hang on to the last little bit of fat more than when you have plenty to spare?

It's easier generally speaking to lose fat if you are very overweight. The closer you get to your ideal weight, the harder it is to lose fat. That's why it's substantiallly easier for someone 40% bodyfat to go to 30% bodyfat than it is for someone 15% bodyfat to go to 5% bodyfat.

It's not linear.
