I saw that clip, his conditioning is awesome. I loved the part when he just finished a "round" and he's holding a normal conversation, while telling someone else that his heartrate was up to around 180.

I like how he uses a HR monitor. It is an excellent way to validate and evaluate training performance, and to recognize overtraining.

I noticed him having to pull his HR monitor up because his strap was loose. That happens to me too. He needs to tighten it up a bit.

Good clip, thanks for sharing.

Very cool. However it is interesting since it blows away either (A) the max heart rate rule or (B) the overtraining rule.

Using the standard formula, he should be working out below 220mhr-34yo*85% = 158 as that would be red line. Yet he buries the redline and "overtrains" at 180+ bpm and keeps it up there the entire workout, no interval training either. As a 32-2-1 fighter it's hard to argue with the results. Everytime I see something like that I am more confused than ever on how to work out optimally.

The 220 minus your age will generally give too low of a maximum HR for conditioned athletes such as this gentleman. And it can give too low of a maximum HR reading for others too, thereby resulting in undertraining for those seeking superfitness.

I am an example of that. At age 52, if I followed this formula, I would get a maximum HR reading of 168 bpm and if I trained at 90% of this I would be at 151 bpm. During a 10k fun run I competed in last November, my average HR for the run was 169 bpm or 92% of my max.

Those seeking superfitness must spend time above 90% of max HR in my opinion using well-designed and sport-specific interval training methods which is how this gentleman is training in the video. What is important to also realize is that HR training zones are sports specific. I've read that upper body HR training zones will be around 13 bpm slower than lower body HR training zones. I believe this based on my own training experiences.

I suggest you use a HR monitor when you train to avoid any confusion about how to train optimally. And while being safe, put the pedal to the metal to better discover what your true maximum HR is. You could very well be undertraining if superfitness is a goal of yours.

My guess is that his maximum HR is about 193 bpm and at 180 bpm he is training at 94% of his max. There is no doubt he is superfit with a capital S.

What he ^^^ said. Plus, overtraining isn't a "rule." Overtraining is a systemic condition, which causes any of a number of symptoms or side effects. It's caused by an accumulation of problems with training and/or diet, and/or sleep. Sherk's not overtraining because of the intensity of his workout, assuming that this workout is what his body can handle.

This thread started out with a video about the awesome training of MMA Sean Sherk. Here is a little update about an aspect of Mr. Sherk's training that didn't come out in the video:

MMA needs to address steroids problem - MMA/Boxing - Yahoo! Sports

He won't be competing in California for the next year. Ditto for the opponent he defeated at the recent UFC event in Sacramento.

Well, that's too bad. I still can't help but respect how hard he busts his ass. Seems like working that hard without steroids would still get him in great condition. Maybe he feels like he needs them to stave off the overtraining.
