Walking

Walking. How much do you do? Is is primarily functional walking, as a means of transportation or exercise walking?

During my recent vacation, I walked an estimated 10 miles per day for 16 days, more than what I normally do.

However in car-heaven California, getting that kind of daily mileage in takes more effort unless you live and work in San Francisco. I'm sure Manhatten-based New Yorkers walk alot too.

I think walking is great. I'm sure once my running days are over, it will be replaced with walking.

To answer my question, I probably average 2 miles per day, primarily exercise walking but some functional walking when I go directly from home to clients located downtown. Last year I walked 9 miles one day going to and from the NCAA track & field championships which I plan to do again this year. I've never walked to or from my office which is about 10 miles from where I live.

I am horrible. I never walk ANYWHERE. I am one of those idiots who drives around until I can find the closest parking spot. I even do this at the gym then I go in and run 3 miles and do a CF WOD. lol my excuse is that it is always raining and cold and I hate being wet. In the summer though I love walking, especially if it is sunset and there is a beach involved.

When it is nice out bf and I like to walk around this lake near our place its just about 3 miles, but this is more of a once every 2-3 weeks for about 1-2 months out of the year!

Before I came to the states I would walk anywhere from 0-7 miles in one day, depending on the weather, whether I took a walk at lunch time, whether I had a lift to work or had to take the train.. so in a 'best case' scenario it was :

1.5 mile walk to get to work (to train, from train to work)
1.5 mile lunch time walk
2 mile to get to gym
1.5 mile home from gym

but on some days, no walking at all.

Now that I am here and i have my bike, i have replaced walking with biking! Today i walked maybe 1 mile, and biked i guess 5 or so. It was a low activity day, i only went to the gym and grocery store.

Living in central Rome, many places can be reached on foot and I love this fact. I regularly shop at farmer's market is about 5 minutes away, and my gym is 10 - 15 minutes away (depends, sometimes I have to really haul my backside when I am late on my classes, sometimes I stop and pet some cats at a park...). Which is good, I am pretty well warmed up when I arrive at the gym and all good to go!

Yeah I was similar in Rome walked everywhere. Lost half a stone in a week and that was despite sneaking out for steaks after dinner in the Irish bar.
I hated the Italien food especially their pizza they dont use enough meat in anything.

I dont walk much either but I dont like it and even when I do plenty I dont think it contributes much to my fitness it never raises my heart rate much puts me out of breath or give me aches so I dont think my body does any adjusting.

Mi dispiace Maxgain that you didn't get to experience the best of Italian food while you were there... there are too many joints which are only geared towards the foreign tourists... they typically serve up crap with exaggerated price tags, they occupy the most convenient/visible spots from the tourists. It is sad to see those people getting disappointed at what they think as "authentic Italian food", without having a real experience.
BTW you need to remember pizza is not a meat oriented dish, and most of the pizza variety here are meatless. If you want something with lots of meat, you would do better with kebobs, which is quite popular in Rome as well!!

Ops, sorry about hijacking the thread.... back to the normal broadcasting folks!!

Fast walking can elevate your HR quite a bit based on my experience.

Many years ago when I tore my ACL, I was not able to enter a favorite 5-mile fun run that I had planned on. So I entered and walked it pre-surgery, as fast as I could. I completed the 5 miles in 55 minutes and some seconds, about a 11 minute mile pace and got one heck of a workout, and was sore for at least one week after.

Hill walking with intensity also does wonders.

Olympic speed walkers do so at a pace that is faster than I can run. It is absolutely amazing.

Maxgain, next time you go to Rome, let me know and I'll tell you where to get your meat pizza.

Does walking to cool down after running count?

I really don't get much opportunity to do much walking. I could walk to work, but it would be much more time-consuming than simply driving. Plus the weather here is crappy. It's always too cold, too hot or too windy.
