walking/running ?
well I (at the moment) can't keep up pace for a long distance so I'd like to know how good walking is for burning up fat / building legs etc compared to running? would walking a mile be better than running half a mile? because I know I would be sweating like a bitch if i ran half a mile lol but walking a mile ... well its not the same is it... Just wondering because I'd much rather walk for miles instead of run.
also how good is bike riding? compared to running?
thanks

Anything which gets your heart rate up is good, whether it's bike riding, running or walking. But with walking you'd have walk a lot longer/father to equal running, and I mean a lot. If you can't run try speed walking up hills to get a better effect. Compared to running, walking isn't near as good as running for burning fat/calories.

Walking is excellent! I've been walking for years after getting out of the Marine Corps. Running was always very difficult for me - it hurt my lungs, my legs, I could never feel relaxed like a lot of runner do. Tell you the truth, I have always thought that I have a slight case of exercise induced asthma.
Anyway, try to walk at the most brisk pace that you can, for at least 45 minutes 5 times a week. I don't know your schedule so that may not work for you as far as how much you get to walk during the week.
Just do what you can.
I'm 34 years old and without doing any leg work weight training, I've always had very toned legs. I attribute it to being an avid walker.
So, no, you don't have to run, just walk briskly and for a good 30 to 45 mintues (45 minutes to 1 hour being the optimum).

Without a doubt, if you can't run then walk

First, your questions are not stupid
Everyone is different when it comes to seeing results. A lot has to to with how hard you are working AND your nutrition.
If all is on a good roll, I'd say about 6 weeks. The initial results may only be noticed by you, but that is plenty to give you encouragement and motivation.
Good luck and stay with us. I'd love to hear how you're doing.

How about walking and running? It might sound silly at first glance but brisk walking mixed with brief periods of jogging is exactly the kind of combination at the heart of this High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) that's all the rage these days. It's just scaled down a bit
As for biking, it's a great cardio exercise and very low impact. And don't get too caught up with distance when starting out. The keys to cardio are duration, intensity and frequency. If you do whatever you do for 30-45 minutes three+ times a week *and* it gets your heart pumping for the entire time then it's worth doing. So don't worry about how far you walk/jog/bike/whatever.

I would try backing off on your weight training a bit. For the first few weeks you shouldn't be lifting so hard or so heavy or so intense that you feel anywhere close to being gnackered!
If you want optimum results, you must embark on the arduous and less thrilling task of a conditioning program. It won't make you turn red or puke or make you so sore that you can't move. But, it will prepare your body completely so that in a few weeks you can make even greater strides in both cardio AND resistance training, without feeling gnackered and it will lessen your potential for injury.
I'm with Timbers and I'd say walk. Then try powerwalking. When you're up for it, do walk/run...so you walk for 2 minutes, run for 1 minute, repeat. I'm assuming there's a reason you even WANT to run?
Jumping rope is good cardio but you won't get that same toning benefit Timbers gets from walks. I might be mistaken on that, (if anyone else knows about this better, please chime in).
Work according to your fitness level (not higher than it), for now. Then push the envelope, but again, based on your fitness level. Before you know it, in a few short weeks you'll be doing great without either feeling confused, frustrated, hurt or bored.

Are you referring to the same conditioning that high school athletes know and love?
