Cardio at around 120bps early in the morning if you can

No carbs after 6PM

Carb up in the morning and decrease as the day goes on

Weight train to help metabolism

Cut out most sugars and processed foods

Eat 6-8 smaller meals instead of 3 large meals being sure to get protein at every meal.

Get your carbs when you need them (when you are most active,) and cut back on them when you don't (when you are least active.) During low activity times, eat mostly protein, with a little bit of healthy fats and carbs.

Stick to complex carbs, and get a decent amount of veggies daily (4-6 cups at least.)

Get your cardio in, lift weights, and eat "clean" calories a little bit below your maintenance level.

He'd probably be better off working at a higher heart rate. At a 120 bps rate (assuming he has an average max hr) the percentage of fat burned will be higher, but the TOTAL amount will be less than if he were exercising at a higher intensity. HIIT training would be even better.

Could be better. I personally think HIIT is a waste of time.

High intensity interval training or some such.

Basically you start w/ a warm-up, then go into a max-effort speed for a period of time, and then drop to a slower speed for a period of time, then go into another max-effort period, and so on for about 15 minutes...or however long you can keep it up.

Personally I don't think its a waste of time because it is a great form of cardiovascular exercise, nevermind the fat-burning benefits gained.

The problem I see with sticking around 120, is you can easily get up to 160 and still stay in a decent fat-burning range...and still keep it up for a good 30-40 minutes.
