Exclamation

What would you do in this case, tonight?

It seems I've accentuated a weakness in my right knee that could turn into a problem if I don't respect it as a warning sign. The ligament on the inside feels weak and tender when I decend stairs or destabilize my balance on that foot. It's probably from being careless about landing when running and from letting my knee wobble in the recent stabilitiy workout I did.

Tonight I'm supposed to run again but I feel it's weak with every step. I have had a very restful inactive day today so far.

Should I....?
  1. Just ignore it, run anyways as planned. If I tear or hurt something take time off for medical attention when that happens. Ice it in the mean time.
  2. Wrap it with a stretch bandage and run anyways hoping it doesn't get worse.
  3. Just go for an hour long brisk walk instead (usually a 20 min. total run of intervals).
  4. Join a gym tonight and use their treadmill
  5. Join a gym tonight and use their stationary bike or rower or elliptical.
  6. Switch up plan and do yoga
  7. Switch up plan and do next full body stability workout being more careful.
  8. Quit trying to be something I'm not and join an aerobics class for seniors.

My vote would be #3 or #6. I would not run as it may aggravate the issue.

Thanks LC. Those are my inclinations too. It's getting too late to join the gym tonight with time left to workout (I was going to later this week) and my mp3 player is out of batteries so I'll walk as log as I can without boredom and add in some yoga if it was not a worthwhile effort.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Thanks Ed, I'm sure it will come up again at some point in my workouts.

Anytime your body tells you something like that, it's ok to take an unscheduled rest day.

It's possible that even just a walk could have aggrevated it.

When in doubt - rest.

When my knees are sore (sometimes sore ligaments, much like you describe), I find stationary bicycle pedaling to be helpful. The repetitive and relatively gentle motion seems to make a difference. While I pedal, I make sure that my knees stay strictly in the planes created by my thigh bones (femur) and lower leg bones (tibia/fibula). Doing so will place the absolute least amount of stress on the knee possible, while still offering cardiovascular and strength building benefits.

Ouch! That had to hurt to write!

You aren't even close to that point yet. Maybe on your 95th birthday you should consider it..........
