It has to be free, so I guess it's going to be body measurements of some kind rather than calipers.
More importantly, I'd like to be able to measure body fat easily and consistently, so I don't care if my measure is that accurate in general as long as it's accurate relative to the next one I take in the same fashion, so I can see my progress (or not)
Thanks.

Assuming you are male, a tape measure on the waist is fairly good. Measure exactly at the navel with the tape horizontal (look in a mirror) to maintain consistent placement. Take several readings until you get a consistent answer - tape tension is important - and remember what you did. It helps to do it the same time every day and to do it every day at first just to get used to doing it consistently. There are many online calculators that will translate this into a reasonably accurate bodyfat number.
Well I'm 5'11, 175lbs, 32" waist which according to ones I've tried puts me at somewhere around 11.5% body fat, although I'm not sure how accurate that's going to be.
Im 5'10", 158lbs 32" and 11.4% body fat.
Some people use clapiers, electronic devices, etc. Whatever is convient really. But if you really want to be precise, immerse yourself in a water tank. Measure the volume of water before and after. The displacement of volume will be the best measurement.
I tend to use this electronic device (Omron HBF306) at the gym. I suppose the key is what ever method you use, just keep it consistant and meassurements should be at the same time, each day or week.
