Unhappy

Why do I crave sweets so much?!

I am soooo frustrated. It all started with Halloween when I took my daughter trick-or-treating. I saw all the chocolate in her bag and started eating a couple pieces a day. I wish I didn't crave so much sugar but I just don't know what to do about it. It's so hard for me to just "quit"...now it sounds like an addiction. Heck, it probably is and I want to cry sometimes. I've got the exercising turned into a habit now so I'm happy about that but now it's the diet that I'm trying to fix once and for all. This is so extremely difficult for me. I want to ask for advice but I know what everyone will say...."stop eating sweets". If only it were that easy. I know it's all mental tho, it's all in my mind. *sigh*

Edited to Add: Sorry, I just realized I put this in the wrong forum...mods feel free to move this to the right place.

Well, its hard...but the fact is you just have to stop, maybe plan certain times of the week where you have a controlled cheat meal/snack of some sort. If you can't cut it completely at least significantly reduce the amount you are eating, and as you get used to that you continue to reduce it until you are satisfied.

goodgirl, I have the same problem but the solution is not as difficult as we think. That doesn't mean it's an easy solution. It just takes some dedication.
The first thing you have to do is re-educate your taste buds. We're all so used to eating sugar that we know exactly what it tastes like and crave more. So how do we re-educate our taste buds you ask? We have to find sugar-free alternatives. Let me give you a substitution list that has been very successful for me.

Instead of using this: I use:
salt; no-salt salt alternative
sugar; splenda
butter; fat-free margine (promise fat-free)
honey; sugar-free imitation honey
jelly; sugar-free preserves/jelly
white flour; wheat flour
(actually, anything white, I use wheat instead)
jello; sugar-free jello
pudding; sugar-free pudding
milk; fat-free milk or soymilk
vegetable oil; olive oil
eggs; egglands best eggs
cheese; 2% lowfat cheese
mayo; fat-free mayo
bread; sugar-free 100% whole wheat bread
peanut butter; natural peanut butter
cottage cheese; 1% lowfat cottage cheese

I think you see my point. For almost every food, there is a healthy and/or sugar-free alternative. When I first started using substitutes, I ate an awful lot of sugar-free jello and some sugar-free pudding. A good food to take care of a sweet tooth is 2 slices of sugar-free wheat bread with sugar-free preserves or jelly. One thing you might think is gross but I discovered it just last week, is I will take a package of sugar-free pudding mix and mix it up in a 24 oz container of 1% low-fat cottage cheese. Gives it a great (sweet) taste but is high in protein. I also buy a package of invidual chocolates...Dove dark chocolate. If I get in the mood for a piece of chocolate, I just grab a Dove dark chocolate. Since it's individual pieces, I just have one. Dark chocolate is healthy for you as long as you don't sit there and eat a bunch. Also, learn to eat more fruit. That's a learned habit, but once your taste buds start to re-educate, you will find that fruit tastes a lot better. So the bottom line is to come up with your own substitution list. Every time I have a sweet tooth, I can take care of it with very few calories. Another good habit is to drink a lot of water before you take care of your sweet tooth. That way, you'll find yourself eating less.

Thanks, Ed. That is probably some of the best advice anyone could have given me. Substitutions is what I'm looking for. Some of those ideas, I already do...but you also gave me some other good ideas. Thanks.

Sugar is literally addictive for me. Whenever I start cutting the first two-three weeks are difficult. I'm really craving sweets. But after that, pfft, its off mt mind. If I'm on the mood for something sweet, I'll eat some fruit, some pieces of prunes. In the mornng I mix choclate flavored protein powder(with stevia) with my low sugar cereal, and thats my sweet fix for the day

heres the solution: buy a tub of muscle milk protein powder, flavors mocha joe or chocolate milk. they are INCREDIBLE! mocha joe tastes exactly like a starbucks drink, and the chocolate milk is as satisfying to me as a chocolate milkshake. they are so good i would drink them even if they werent protein powders.

now you can satisfy your chocolate cravings with something that wont make you fat.
