Good running shoes - which you've measured and fit for. That's a good answer. Running for me was absolute torture then I saved up and bought a pair of running specific shoes that were perfect for me.
Now running is still torture - but a different, good kind. I don't like it any better, but it's still not painful to my ankles, shins, knees, hips like before.

I'mnot paying a fortune for shoes...and then having to replace them every 3 months. No way. I'll just walk . I'm 277, thats' different than 240 .
I still think 240lb man is still pretty heavy for running. In my opinion, we are all built to do something, and people usually want to do what they aren't built for. Jaster is a big block, he's made to lift heavy things. People who are 160 lbs and 5'11...they are made to run. Just my opinion.

Don't blame you on not wanting to invest in expensive shoes if you aren't going to use them for running. Just walk fast - it's obviously doing what you need it to do.
Yeah, running sucks - but for those who like it, or feel the need to do it...good shoes make an unbelievable difference.

Yeah, I played basketball in skate shoes once...I have four blisters the size of half dollars. It was horrible!
I played once in flip flops too....that was interesting....

I got mine (Nike Air max) on sale for about 45 or 55 bucks.
They say they should last 6 months to a year. But remember I don't run as often or as far as a "Runner" so I'm thinking 18 to 24 months life span.

Well I think this topic is better expressed by saying running is hard rather than running sucks.
I ran a 1,600 meter race and 3,200 meter race last night giving it my best effort and I guarantee you I hurt as much as someone lacing up running shoes and going at it for the first time.
There was one man probably in his 40s who ran the 400 meters in 72 seconds. He probably weighed 210 lbs. and had a protruding belly like someone who was 4 months pregnant. If he can do it then so can I.
Jaster, think of your shoes lasting in terms of mileage rather than months. Count walking and everyday use mileage as well. You should get 400-500 miles out of a good pair of running shoes.
Running is the real deal. You enjoyed it as a kid and you can enjoy it as an adult.

But isn't this a bit like saying little people (like me) shouldn't lift? I mean, I'm really not built for lifting and my weights are way wimpier than anybody else's in the weight room.

Nope Liftgirl it isn't.
You aren't going to seriously injure yourself in the weight room unless you make a mistake with form or try to handle way more weight than you should...which you aren't doing.
If a very large person runs that's a lot of weight working on those knee and ankle joints.
Is it impossible, or necessarily bad - not really. But it is riskier for a big person to run than a little one. When I was 300lbs, just walking made my knees swell and hurt. Now, I can run without causing them any problems at all.
One doc I know (a runner of course) insists however that running is very healthy for the knees. Not jogging - running, flat out hard running. He says don't jog to get more distance, run gently (whatever that means)...I thought I understood it from one of weston's running descriptions and was able to run much better after it. However, I think I still have length of stride problems to work on.
Hope that simple explanation makes sense to you. Not speaking for Dave, just butting in what what I think I understand.

No, i'm not saying that at all. I'm just saying that people always want what they aren't right? Well, typically anyways. I'm not trying to discourage anyone who is seeking goals, just saying that certain things come more naturally for certain people. Like what Dan has said before, you could lift your ass off, work up to a 500lb dead, then some 300lb dude that's 5'9 could walk up to it without ever training and pick it up like nothin. See what i'm saying?
If i were to ever run 4 miles without stopping, i'd have to bust my ASS to get to that level, whereas someone who is 5'11 at 155 lbs may be able to do that without much work. Not to mention, my joints would be about dead by then lol...i'm just not light enough to take that kind of punishment in my opinion. Get it?
The only good reason to be fat is I'll survive longer than any 5'11 155lb dude in a famine .

Very true. If it were among your goals, however, I believe that you could get down toward the low 200 range where running may not be as difficult.
As far as running itself? In the right environment it can be enjoyable, refreshing, and a great way to kill stress. The only thing I like more than cardio is resistance training.
