A Very Long Engagement
Absolutely amazing movie. It's a foreign film by the same director that did Amelie. It's in French (subtitled in English). The cinematics are outstanding. Some of the camera angles and settings are simply stunning and beautiful. This film I could dominate many American movies. It is a love story tied into a war story, but by no means is it a girly movie. It is also one long mystery. I highly recommend this movie!! : :

amélie is one of my absolute most favourite movies!!! living where i do, it was in french with no subtitles, but it was so nice for once for me to be able to understand what was going on and have to explain it to my french-canadian bf at the time (french-canadians from this region frequently have a lot of trouble understanding REAL french).

I am going to be watching Amelie sometime in the next few days here. A Very Long Engagement is probably going to be just as good for you, and you'd probably get even more out of it than me knowing French!

I'll be checking this out also.. .Thanks for the recommend GCS. You've put some good ones out there.
I've eyed Amelie a couple times but haven't picked it up yet. Will put it on the list.

Yeah. I've seen a very long engagementits great, but its not as good as amelie. The best french film though, is Jean de Florette. Its funny, i've never seen a bad french film. The french are very extrovert souls with a nack of producing original films.

I have Amelie here at home, yet to watch it, but if it's better than A Very Long Engagement it must be pretty darn good! Some of the scenes were just stunningly beautiful and the camera shots were amazing...nothing like regular American movies.

monsieur batignole is a frenchman - a grocer, i believe, by trade. when the nazis come in, his son-in-law-to-be turns informant and betrays their jewish neighbours, the doctor he owes a lot to and his family, so the son-in-law-to-be could have the luxurious apartment for himself and the batignoles.
m. batignole is sick over it, but figures what can he do?
one day, the informant is hosting a party for his nazi friends at the apartment. monsieur batignole answers the door to a knock and finds one of the boys who used to live there wondering why they were in his house and what happened to his family? monsieur batignole hides the child and that's when life takes a left turn - he ends up on a very long road trip with an assortment of young children.
i only saw it the once - when i went back to re-rent it, it was gone.
