There is a classic that everyone (I think) should see called Heavy Metal. You should be able to find it at a decent video store.

Princess Mononoke
Fist of the North Star
Wolf Brigade
Samurai Champloo

Melody of Oblivion (Sci-fi/mystery/action)
Samurai Champloo (Lot of action, blood, killing. Decent plot I guess.)
Akira (Must watch. Action.)
Wolf's Rain (Sci-fi/mystery/action)
Madlax (Sci-fi/mystery/action)
Last Exile (Fantasy/sci-fi)
Fooly Cooly (Comedy)
Air (Tragedy)
Scrapped Princess (Fantasy/sci-fi)
Yakitate! Japan (Comedy, bread baking...)
Monster (Mystery, murder)
Hellsing (Vampires)
Read or Die (TV and Movie versions, very original IMO, only watched this recently.)
Just a few of the better ones I can think of.
Then you have the classic generic shonen action stuff like:
Inuyasha
Naruto
Dragonball, Dragonball Z, Dragonball GT
Bleach
Shaman King
One Piece
Hunter x Hunter
Kenshin
and as far as Heavy Metal goes, defenitely something anyone would enjoy. Whoever made that was doing some serious drugs. Same goes for FLCL :
Check out www.animesuki.com if you want to see some new stuff. They also have a recommendations section where there are people far geekier than me who can probably provide some better choices.

Ha, for me the best anime has been and always will be "Escaflowne" I don't think its childish in the least bit its more of a serious anime with a very likable and intresting plot ITS FRIGGIN AWESOME!!
I also saw some Naruto the thing I find is that its like Dragon Ball Z kinda, they're fight scense last for like 10 episodes...and also they don' thave enough fighting..lol!

ROFLMGDAO!!!!
about 15 years ago, i introduced my older daughter to anime by buying her the original Akira (which, btw, i don't much like, myself). the contagion spread to my younger daughter and my house is DROWNING in the stuff.
both girls are *superb* artists in the genre. my older daughter has fandubbed Revolutionary Girl Utena, as well as a couple of Sailor Moon episodes. currently, she's part of the team developing Lingerie Soldier Papillon Rose for the western market.
personally, i like Kingdom in the Sky much more than Princess Mononoke - i also love Kiki's Delivery Service and okay, i'll admit it, i like FAKE, too, which is kinda like confessing to enjoying harlequin books or britney spears' music. my absolute away favourite is Spirited Away.
